Subject: How to registering for an IM?
I'm thinking of (seriously really truly thinking of) registering for IMLP 2010. I know the online registration is a and sells out in minutes, so I was going to head up to Lake Placid and volunteer for this year's race. Yes, I admit my main motivation is registering, but I'm actually really excited about seeing the race firsthand and being able to contribute to the athletes' experience in some positive way, too.

For those of you who have registered on-site, how does that work? Do you have to be a volunteer to do so? Do you just "stand in line" on that day to register?

Haven't done it but....

Usually being a volunteer helps you...at the least you get your own special line which will be shorter than the general line.

And yes, it will be a line that will open at a "set time".  Best bet would be to bring a blanket and get there a little early.  I don't think you need to go overboard, but if it opens at 9am, don't show up at 9am!  Show up earlier!  I would also bring a friend so one can go for coffee.

In 2007 we volunteered for Ironman Wisconsin and then signed up for 2008 the following morning. In 2007 they did NOT have a special line for volunteers. We showed up at 5AM and were about 20th in line. They opened the doors at 7AM and started signing people up at 8:40ish even though they said it wouldn't start until 9AM. Once they started, it went VERY quickly at least for us folks at the front of the line. I believe there were close to 1000 people in line by the time they started registration.

In 2008 they started having a special line for the volunteers which I heard went quite well.

When I signed up they just gave you a voucher and then you registered later (2 weeks later?) on the internet. I've heard they may be changing that a bit due to the number of people that don't actually sign up.

Volunteering a year prior to the race was well worth it. I think you get a better feel for the race depending on where you volunteer. We volunteered as bike catchers in T2 which was great since you got to see how people felt after the bike and before the marathon. Some racers kissed and thanked their bike while others kicked it and never wanted to see it again.

Good Luck and Enjoy the journey!

At IMAZ this year (another NAS event) there was a seperate line for volunteers (you had to show your wristband or t-shirt).  Everyone in the volunteer line got to register before they accepted anyone from the general public line.  At registration you gave some basic information and paid via credit card.  You then received a follow up e-mail to complete your registration.  NAS now makes you pay on site to get a better count of the numbers.

I volunteered at IMLP this year and we did have our own line.  Since we had our own line that got in before any of the general public line, you were able to show up pretty late and still get in fine.  I think I showed up at about 30-60 minutes ahead of time.  You might want to do the 60 minutes side if it is important to you.

There was an outside line just to get into the oval, and then once inside we split up into volunteers and non-volunteers.  Bring a pen with you - they handed out the forms right in line.  Since we completed the forms before they opened, once the registration opened the volunteer line was in and out in 10-15 minutes.

Also be aware thay they are charging your credit card on site from now on.

Volunteering is fun, it's going to be a lot more than just putting your time in just to get your special place.

Same for me at IMAZ this past Nov. Let me add that volunteering was very rewarding. Originally, my sole purpose for volunteering was to improve my chances of getting in. But it was so awesome to be out there seeing what the athletes go through. I feel like I learned a lot from previewing what I might expect next year.

I know IMLP is really hard to get a spot, but how about Wisconsin?

Fortunately, I somehow managed to register for IMAZ 2009 online, despite multiple timeouts at www.active.com  Their website was certainly not setup to handle the traffic load!

You don't *have* to do a trip.  You can just enter via the Community Fund.  Seems that if the only reason one was traveling to the race was to register, they might as well just register via the community fund.  I agree with other posters that the experience of volunteering is a great reason to make the trip, but if the only reason one if making the trip is to register, save yourself the trip and register via the CF.  By the time one adds gas, tolls, food, hotel, etc., I bet the cost of a trip approaches the $775 extra one pays to enter via the CF, to say nothing of one's time.

Eh, I'm pretty close to LP (I'm in Jersey, go up there practically every year to backpack the Adirondacks) so it'll be like a mini vacation for me anyway.

I'm really looking forward to volunteering, though. I think it'll be fun!

It is pretty cool to actually see the race before doing it.  But beware, even if you are not thinking of doing an IM it has a way of getting to you.

I went up to IMWI in 2007 to cheer on a friend.  Was planning on doing it in 2009.

Guess who signed up and did 2008 instead.
