Hey all, just thought I would introduce myself. While I am not new to a good workout, it has been since high school since I have trained seriously. Because of which I seemed to have put on quite a few extra pounds(mostly in the beer gut) during my college years. Now I am 3 years past graduation and have 50 lbs. to lose to get to my target weight(175lbs). I am going to take it slow and hopefully get into good enough shape to complete a 5k without walking by the end of this year. I am going to be doing most of my training in the local athletic club since the weather in this city seems to be bad 2/3rds of the year because of winter (which seems to last forever). Anyways, I just thought I would pop in and say hi since I might be around for a while.

Welcome to the site Jeremy.I was in the same boat as you two years ago, had put on weight during college/grad school, and was up to 235. Started run/walking. Now two years later I'm down almost 60 pounds (176.5 as of this morning), have completed some 5ks, 10ks, a 10 miler, and a marathon, and am training for 5 tris this year including a half iron distance in August. All that to say that you can do it, get moving and it will happen. Best of luck.Rob

the snow doesnt seem to end...i hear ohio is reaching a record amount of winter snow ever recorded...

good luck training for the running part...keep it easy and dont decide to run twice the distance you have ever ran cuz your feeling good that day...a little restraint will see you to your 5k goal.

Welcome.  You've found a great place for support and information...and a dose of humor.

WOW, that is impressive! I think you have certainly given me something to set a goal for the next year of training. The hardest part for me is going to be continuing to train even when that little voice in my head is telling me to watch that old re-run of Seinfeld(or whatever else is on when i am about to head to the gym).

Yeah, I have tried to work out a couple of times in the last year when i was feeling "good" and would try much too hard....and end up quitting after one workout. I am going to try a much slower approach in the michael pate plan to build up a slow base of around 22-weeks. I think taking an approach such as this I will not get hurt or burn myself out.

Thank you for your welcome...and welcome to you too. Since I've started using the training log and reading the articles, it is much esier to stay focused and monitor progress...the site, however does tend to reduce my productivity at work...

Good luck!

Being a developer i am definitely all about keeping statistics and monitoring progress, which is why this site is appealing to me right now. Your right about the productivity at work, I have spent most of the last two days becoming a hermit here, reading articles and preparing my plans and logs and such. I think I will buy a Bronze or Silver membership just to support these guys to keep this great site going.

Thanks for the welcome, and good luck with the training!

Jeremy
