Average pace per 100y is 1:40 +/-.

steves_training - 2009-01-05 8:52 AM Now I don't expect any sympathy, but please appreciate the guy you zoom by on the bike/run while wondering how the heck he got so far ahead of you! He's just a poor swimmer =)

Believe me, we do!  When I see swimmers like the fish in this thread at the pool I am always amazed and stare for awhile.  Just don't get how they can swim so fast.  I mean, when they're out of the water they just look like normal people.

No clue.  I've always known how to swim, but never been a swimmer - Until this past Saturday.
As of right now, I've had two swim workouts that lasted an hour each, and there was lots of resting involved!  I'm going to work tomorrow morning witht he masters coach to get some pointers to help my form.  But I'm not even a little bit concerned with time yet.  After swimming 100 yards or so, just being able to finish that last lap is reward enough!  When I can knock out a few hundred yards without needing to stop and rest, and have a higher comfort level in the pool, maybe then I'll begin to think about times.  Not there yet though!  Interesting to see everone what everyone else can do though.

If I break a 2:06/100 yds, I'll be happy.  I know that I will never get that fast, because, frankly, I'm a runner and will catch most persons later.

I have not done one full out lately but my last workout was 12x100 @ 1:35.

I'm the OP.  I actually didn't mean how fast per 100 for just 100.  I meant how it averages out per 100 over the course of several 100s put together.  We are endurance athletes afterall.  :)  I really should have been much more clear about that.  I apologize for any confusion.

OK in that case it was 1:01 per hundred for 1300 yards.

Oh, I forgot to tell you it was down current on a river.  ;-)

Yeah, yeah.  :)

I really did average that for 100 yds. And the swim was REALLY DOWN CURRENT.

I'm not afraid to post my mortal like numbers - without fear from the tri swim gods....  I have never had any coaching or lessons (other than as a little kid just to learn how).

My best all out 100 was 1:18.

Any time trial workouts that are 1200 yards or more, I average about 1:35-1:40 per 100.  I have raced at 1:35 to 1:50 (but that's questionable due to lack of precise course measurement)

bryancd - 2009-01-03 7:51 PM Bottom line: what you can swim in a pool has very little to do with what your IM or Half pace is. I've never broken 1:10 for 100 yards and I swim 1 flat for IM or 29:00 flat for IM or Half. I average 1:23/100 yards in workouts in the pool.

I'm with brian. I might be able to do a 1:10 on a single 100, but I can drop 1:25's all day over distance. I never workout intervals, because, well, I'm not sure what they do.

I'm a little slower than brian, of course. On the swim. Then he disappears, as opposed to Stocks, who disappears on the swim. How does he DO that?

Seriously, gauge yourself by warming up 500, then doing a 1000 or 1500M TT. Then you'll know exactly where you stand. The 100 time doesn't matter unless you're looking at a black line.

I'm at the point where I usually average 1:45-1:50/100 for anything 1000 yards or shorter, but that's in a pool. My fastest 100 I can remember doing was in the 1:30-1:35 range, but I haven't really tried going all out for 100 in awhile. I think I could crack 1:30 if I had a good day. All of this is thanks to a few sessions with a swim coach; prior to working with her I hit a plateau of 2:00/100 and never really broke through. I may only be doing 15 seconds/100 faster, but I'm not working as hard as I was doing 2:00/100s previously. I'm never going to be winning my AG in the swim, but then again I don't win it in the other 2 disciplines either.

I've been 'swimming' (if that's what you call it) for about 2 years... I still am not very good - somewhere around 2:10/100, but I've come down from about 2:45/100 when I started.. I think I have a mental block after that. or I'm just not a good swimmer. Man, I need to get into the pool more.

I haven't read the WHOLE thead, but I thought I'd make the slowpokes feel faster - My average is 3:30... but I usually combine freestyle and breast stroke. My fastest 100 all freestyle is about 3:10... so I win for being the slowest? I've only been swimming a few weeks, and I haven't worked with a coach yet, so I have hope of improving. At least I'm doing it
