Master 1887 Loveland, Ohio | Subject: Minutes it takes you to swim 100 yards? So, I've spent the last few months actually learning how to swim. I swam between 900 and 1,000 yards in my last tri. I came in dead last in the swim, but I finished it. As I've had the chance to get in the pool more lately (just got a Y membership), I've started to improve. I've still got a long way to go, but I'm definitely getting better. As I've started to focus on speed now and see my minutes per 100 yards decrease, I started wondering what the typical minutes per 100 yards is for everyone on here. I'm not trying to compare myself, but I just want to know how well eveyone does. Thanks a lot! |

Subject: RE: Minutes it takes you to swim 100 yards? It completely depends, honestly. You will see people who are very close to 1:00/100 yds to well past 2:00/100 yds. |

Champion 7547 Albuquerque, New Mexico | Subject: RE: Minutes it takes you to swim 100 yards? 100 yards? During a swim workout this week, I swam 100 yards in 1:27 (very, very fast for me). This fall, I've seen my time for 100 yards drop into the 1:35 range. I can hold 1:40 per 100 yards for 300 yards now, and I'm in the range of 8:30 for 500 yards. This puts me mid-pack in most of my races. |

Royal(PITA) 14270 West Chester, Ohio | Subject: RE: Minutes it takes you to swim 100 yards? I learned how to swim properly over the past 2 years. I've gone from 3 min/100 to 2 min/100 if I really push it. Most days at a cruise I hang 2:10-2:15, working on trying to drop that but he key is having enough gas in the tank to then bike and run when I'm done swimming. |

Davenport, IA | Subject: RE: Minutes it takes you to swim 100 yards? The last time I swam I did 3 sets of 400yds freestyle (and one of mixed strokes) My first set averaged in the 1:5x's and times went up about 7secs/100 per set. I have to watch myself when I start, because a lot of times my first 100 will be in the 1:3x range and I gas out. Good luck with your swimming, from what everyone says, the more you do the better you'll get. |

Champion 5781 Northridge, California | Subject: RE: Minutes it takes you to swim 100 yards? It depends on the workout--this week I did 10 x 100 yds on 30 sec. rest at 1:35 each. A week earlier, I did a non-stop 2 mile pool swim and was barely under 2:00 per 100 for the whole thing. |

FWIW, I've never swam OVER an hour in an IM swim and have never been UNDER 1min for 100yds even in my top form. Virtually every guy in our pool going <1min for a 100y are 53min or better IM swimmers. running2far - 2009-01-02 10:03 PM Right now 58/59 seconds off a push....in season 55 secs all out. |

I went 54 high off the blocks in high school as my pr. i'm much faster in the pool and that BLOWS for competitive swimming. Taking all out times here - not sets. going 0:53:x at IM is about a 1:15 average pace for 2.4 miles...those guys should be well under a min all out. They should be hitting the wall at a min for SETS for hundreds. Edited by running2far 2009-01-02 10:45 PM |

Regular 98 Spokane, Washington | Subject: RE: Minutes it takes you to swim 100 yards? I seem to be the slowpoke of this bunch! I started swimming 2 years ago and learned the freestyle stroke from a book. My times last year were all above 3 minutes per 100. I've just had some simple coaching and my times are now barely below 3 minutes, but I'm improving. Start with where you are and keep working on technique. Get help from someone you trust and who is faster than you are or someone who is a coach. I used to hate swimming but now I love it. Best wishes in your swimming, Joann |

For not trying to be an a##, you've been quite successful. Really, calling out someone's race performance??? If this is just a friendly competetive thing between the two of you, my apologies. If you're just a stranger checking race splits... that's a little odd. To answer the OP (and at the risk of having my race performance judged), you've realized you're going to get answers from all over the map, so it's really irrelevant. My best set ever I think was 12 x 100 leaving on 1:20, coming in about 1:15. To me, for racing tris swim performance is all about maintaining a consistent strong pace for 10+ 100s. Went 1:35/100 at IMAZ, so I guess I was dogging it

Expert 810 Southeast | Subject: RE: Minutes it takes you to swim 100 yards? I started learning how to swim properly a little over a year ago. At first, I couldn't swim 100yd period. As soon as I could, I guess my times were around 2:15 (for one). Now I can do one 100yd sprint in about 1:35. I think I'm holding around 1:50/100 for longer distances, and soon I'll be working hard to bring that down. Sounds like you are at the point where the times really start to come down with improvements in technique. That's a fun time. I went through that too, then plateuaed, then hired a coach and have made further gains...more fun times. Good luck! |

Extreme Veteran 577 | Subject: RE: Minutes it takes you to swim 100 yards? I just swam a PR of 1:16 recently with my old high school swim team. When I was in high school, my 100 free PR was 1:10, and oddly enough, my 100 backstroke fastest time was a 1:02:85. My coach never understood why my backstroke was faster than my free, but now it is reversed because all I train in is freestyle swimming. |

Expert 987 Durham, North Carolina | Subject: RE: Minutes it takes you to swim 100 yards? Well, well, well.... I just hope that all the others ... the majority of us "regular" swimmers are just not posting our swim times because the speedster's jumped in first and posted their times ... and the rest of us are just too embarrassed now to post our times. I think once I was finally able to swim 300 yds non-stop freestyle ... I started timing my 100 yd splits and was a little over 3:00 minutes per 100 yds. By my first sprint tri (and my longest swim had been 750 yds.) I was averaging around 2:30 or 2:45 per 100 yds. By my 2nd sprint tri I think I was averaging around 1:55 or 2:05 per 100 yds ... can't remember exactly ... or maybe it was 2:15 .... anyhow .... I've actually slowed some now because I'm tryingto save some gas in the tank and swim longer .... I think if I were to swim 1000 yds I would average around 2:30 to 2:45 per 100 yds.

The OP asked for 100yard times, never specified a context. My fastest 1000 yards ever was last week and was in the 1:58/100yards range. But something you would never know from my logs are race times is that my flat out 50yard time is 35seconds. I'd guess I would be i the 1:20 range for a flat out 100 yards but I usually do 50's on the minute when I am doing speed work so I haven't tested that distance by itself. Don't going calling BS if you don't have the whole picture. |

Melon Presser 52116 | Subject: RE: Minutes it takes you to swim 100 yards? As you've seen, the range goes from 1:10 to 3:00 per hundred yards for distance swims (meaning in triathlons). When I was a competitive swimmer, I had crazy fast times for 100yd/m sprint races. Now that I'm a "slow fat triathlete," my ocean/lake distance times in tris range from 1:40-1:50/100yd. In top form (as a triathlete), I can cruise swim sets at 1:20-5. I am not currently in top form! |

Cycling Guru 15134 Fulton, MD | Subject: RE: Minutes it takes you to swim 100 yards? As the last swim of '08 I did an all out 100. In water start, open turns. 1:18.5. My best ever was a 1:17 earlier in the year. I typically average in the 1:35 - 1:45 range for normal 100's in training, but suck in open water and my averages are usually well into the upper 1:50's. I've only been swimming (inconsistently) since Dec. '05 with some pretty long breaks of not much swimming. But I have done two IM's and a full distance aqua velo, so I have some sort of endurance at least ..... |

Expert 1183 Fort Wayne, IN | Subject: RE: Minutes it takes you to swim 100 yards? In the pool, my best is 1:46 per 100 yards for 2000 yards. I don't do flip turns and lose quite a bit on the turns. In my one tri (Oly) I killed myself in the swim and was 1:32 per 100 yards. Edited by nickster 2009-01-03 6:54 AM |

Champion 7036 Sarasota, FL | Subject: RE: Minutes it takes you to swim 100 yards? In practice I'm usually around 2:00/100. Occasionally I can get into the mid 1:45's if I push hard. In my last race I was BOP in my age group at 2:10/100. After blowing up on the swim in my first couple of tri's I've since tried to focus on being smooth and efficient. Mark |
