I just heard someone in my office say "we go through a gallon of milk every day" in reference to her famiy's drinking habits. And the guy she was talking to said "we're almost there..."

Just curious. How much are you drinking?

Was the last question meant to be on topic?

I was thinking it would be funny to do another poll- "How much beer does your family drink?"  Mine would be way over 2 gallons...

We're probably still in the 3-4 gallons per week stage with four of us eating most of our meals at home.  When my older two boys were living at home, we'd go through a gallon a day with cereal at breakfast and a glass apiece at dinner.

We're barely at the 1 gallon mark at our house.  It's just us two here.  Eric has cereal most mornings, and that's probably the main usage.  Although I like a nice glass of milk with my PB&J sammies.

When I was a kid, we were close to that.  We'd have milk at breakfast, and us kids would have milk with dinner.  And then there was the glass we drank with our afternoon snacks.  I have clear memories of sitting at the table with my high school girl friends, and drinking a glass of cold milk.

Mmm... now I want some milk.

Husband is lactose intollerant and I never cared for it much.  I occassionally use some in cooking or have it for coffee if I am having company, but it will go bad in the fridge long before I can use it all (even the single serving size we buy)

I am always amazed at families leaving costco with several HUGE jugs.   I marvel at other things I see people buy at costco too.

I have 3 kids under 3 and a husband that loves milk so we are close to a gallon a day but not quite.

Heh. I'm single and I don't spend weekends at home. I go through 2 or 3 - closer to 3 - gallons a week. That's 3 gallons in five days and I rarely eat full meals at home. When I was married, we'd regularly down a gallon a day together. If I had a place to store milk at work, I'd go through more.

We did the math when we first got married, thinking we were spending so much money on milk. At that time, it was around the same price as soda. Given that ALL we drank was milk, with the very occasional juice and then my spouse drank tea in the summer, we weren't spending that much. Now it is the only cold beverage I drink (except when hiking/working out). When milk prices spiked a couple years ago, that nearly killed the grocery budget. We ate a lot of ramen and kept on drinking scads of milk.

Milk is quite possibly the nastiest tasting beverage on the planet.  I can't imagine actually drinking a glass.  There was a point where I would put milk in my cereal and then pour it out before I ate the cereal.  Now I just end up throwing it away.

We buy the small one (pint?) and always have to throw it away when it expires.  If the date says 1/14.  It's gone the morning of 1/14!

Are you sure you're not buying buttermilk? I could swim in a pool of milk with my mouth open and it would be empty by the time I reached the other side!

Me? None. But I had a roomate in college you would drink 1/2 gallon each meal. He quickly dispelled the rumor that a gallon of milk can't be consumed in a half hour. 10 minutes, it was gone. He took a long nap after that.

Agreed! I have tried to force myself to like milk as an adult, thinking that maybe it was just a kid thing. But I am not, and have never been a picky eater and I know what I like and don't like. And milk is foul. It doesn't taste like anything and it makes my throat all gumky and nasty and ick, just thinking about it makes me gag.

Cheese, however, is an entirely different story. I would seriously die if I couldn't eat cheese. How does something so delicious come from something so disgusting?

Cultures [bacteria]. So basically you are saying that fat, protein and water is disgusting, but bacteria is delicious!

My opinion: I don't think humans were meant to be drinking cow's breastmilk, which is why I'm fascinated at the amounts people consume. Not judging, just fastinated!

Carry on...

Until I can find women's breastmilk on the shelves of my local grocery store then cow's breastmilk will have to do.

My husband and I don't drink milk. We do go through a pint of half and half every 2 weeks or so, a 2-lb block of cheddar every week and a half, and lots of butter. Not such big fans of milk, HUGE fans of stuff that can be made from it!

Bacteria are magic.

I tried to like milk as an adult, too.  I can drink a glass once every 6 months or so.  I do like the Horizon strawberry milk boxes, but that's because it doesn't taste like real milk.

Flavored milk is an exception. I like chocolate and strawberry milk. I don't love the gummy after-taste, but it's tolerable when it's chocolate

We go through about 2 gallons a week.  If my FIL is staying with us for work, we might hit a third.

I had 4 sisters growing up and I drank milk all of the time (like, out of the jug).  We went through about 7 or 8 gallons a week.  Luckily, the grocery store was about a mile away and Mom could send me to get a gallon on my bike, in a pinch.

When I was on dialysis, I was not allowed to drink milk.  It was one of the first things I had after my transplant.  Milk and mashed potatoes.  I couldn't stand drinking the soy.

We have a family of 5 children. When they were all living at home (3 are now gone) we were going through 2+ gallons per day. We now have just the 2 at home and still average a gallon a day. I think I need to buy the cow.

Between my DH and I we go through 1-2 gallons a week.  Weeks he is not working 14 hour days it is closer to 2.

Growing up my sister and brother could go through a gallon a day by themselves.  I usually only drink it with cereal or cookies.  Might be something to that "Makes a body strong" though.  Both sis and bro are over 6 feet tall and I am strething it at 5'3"

I have 3 daughters and all at one time or currently had/have lactose tolerance issues.  My oldest(now 7) started with goats milk, then we got her to whole milk.  Then when my 5 year old was born, we switched to Soy milk due to issues.  Now our 2 year old drinks soy because of issues but she was started on Rice milk due to not tolerating lactose at all (even soy has some form in it).  Consequently, my 7 yo hates soy but loves whole milk(1 gallon per week), my 5 yo loves soy and dislikes whole milk (1-2 gallons soy per week), and my 2 yo only drinks soyas regular milk still does bad things to her heinie(1-2 gallons per week).

On average we go through 1 gallon whole milk, and 2-4 gallons of Soy per week.

ray6foot7 - 2009-01-14 5:14 PM Milk is my favorite food.  I used to drink a gallon a day while I was in high school and college.  I tell people that's why I am so much taller than anyone in my family, that and my mom sunbathed me as an infant.  Anyways,  my wife has made me slow down on milk consumption, so the two of us go through only 4 gallons a week now.

I also used to drink a gallon a day but I only topped out at 6'3".  Until I was in high school we only had powdered skim milk in the house.  I still can't drink anything but skim, though I can use others with cereal.  My daughter and I go through 3 gallons a week or so now.
