I've run in temps around zero (or well below that if you count wind chill). If you layer up properly they usually aren't terrible. However, my coldest run ever was during a HS XC championship. Temp in the teens, six inches of snow on the ground, even more in the air. I wore short shorts, a singlet, and racing flats (no socks). It really didn't help that I fell twice during the race.

Did 30 minutes in -18F this morning. I could have gone longer but I felt bad for my dog.

i may a few of u off...but being from miami i cannot run in the cold(50s). Th lowest temp was 56 and my chest was about rip apart. Instead running in the 70s during january works just fine for me.

Portland doesn't really get below 30-ish very often but I'm currently in Eastern Oregon where it's 13 degrees.  The first 5 minutes can be a bit like torture, but I tend to warm up really fast.  On my last run I actually got so warm that on my second lap around the city I actually took off a couple of layers.

Went about 30 minutes the other day in 8F. It wasn't bad there was no wind. It's -5F today with the windchill. Glad it's a bike trainer day.

-15F, 12mph winds, Not sure what that makes the windchill.

That, to me, officially too cold to run. Made it a 98 minutes. I was like Luke Skywalker on the planet Toth. It was cold. Seriously cold.

I can do -10F, light winds, relatively no problem, but that one day with the higher wind man, that was brutal.

It's going to be 17-20* tomorrow for my 9 miler, and 25-30* on Sunday for my 12 miler.

Is it worth it to get cold weather tights?  The couple pairs of tights I own aren't that warm ... or should I just throw on a pair of sweat pants over the tights?  I'm thinking, for Saturday's 9 miler: cold weather tights, warm socks, short sleeved tech, long sleeved tech, windbreaker, hat, gloves, gator.  For Sunday's 12 miler: same, minus the short sleeved tech and the gator.  Thoughts?

-30C temp (-35 with windchill). With the proper clothing its not too bad but at that level, especially with wind, windstopper everything is a must. Recently my cutoff has probably been around -15C, but that is because we have a treadmill in the basement. Shane

30 minutes was more than enough Wink

-35F with windchill. With the right layering and no exposed skin,  I could to do that for about an hour.  The only reason I quit was due to sweating.  With the wind you are almost instantly an icecicle.  Now, I run on a TM in the basement and let a fan blow on me to simulate the experience.

My record is -14F.  This week I ran 5 miles at 10F with -3 windchill.  I wore my heavy bike tights and 3 layers up top.  I kept my face covered and stayed pretty warm.

31 is the coldest I have run in. For some stupid reason I caugh pretty bad if it's cold and I run.  Today it was 1 and I have no desire to run in rediculous cold like that !

I am pretty sure that the coldest I have ever run in was thursday this week. I went for 30 min or so in a nice -30C(-22F) With the wind it was about -35F or so.

I cut a bit of the CD that day though, I assumed I was cooling faster

I remember in high school I would run outside with ice and snow, but if you layered up it wasn't too bad. Of course, I wore nothing but cotton.

In college I remember playing a rugby game in the snow. It was below zero with snow on the ground and ice under the snow. Since it was more of a scrimmage, the ref changed up the rules a bit. When we would scrum down, we couldn't push due to the ice under the snow, and I lost complete feeling in my toes and fingers. I have pictures from that game and still can't believe we played in that weather.

-11.4 degrees F (-24 degrees C).  This was when I lived in Germany (Munich) back in the 90's.  It was very cold but still good.  We were used to having really cold winters, so you get used to it :-)

You'd have thought that the marathon in Antarctica would have been colder, but it wasn't actually that bad :-)

Most of you are bat sh!$ crazy... -40, -35, 10 mile race in a blizzard?!?!!.  I ran 4 miles last night at it was about 0.  I never would have done that unless I was running with a group.

I went to school in Maine, we had a football game in -10 with sleet.  I also was skiing once and they closed the mountain because it was -100 at the top.

Ran/skiied year round in northern WI and the upper penninsula of MI for years.  Lots and lots of runs/skiing/racing in sub-zero temps.  I would guess coldest run was around -35 F.  Coldest temperature I remember up there was -60 F, but I didn't run that night.

Now I live down south and wonder how I ever managed to deal with all that cold weather.  Either I got soft with age, or you just get used to the climate you're in.  Probably both, actually.

Depends on how you heat up. If you get hot easily, go lighter. I hate overheating..being a little less dressed does me better than too much clothes. I think you'd be fine with what you suggest. Zippered necks are awesome! And zippers to pull open on jackets are great too (vents under arms). Also, not sure if you'd want the windbreaker unless windy or unless its very breathable...maybe a fleece jacket?!?
