Subject: Losing Fitness?

Hey gang,

I have been out of commission for 6 weeks with fatigue/inability to exercise (due to ?).  How long does it take to lose all fitness?  I have trained for years and did long distance training last summer (half IM).  I don't see any end in sight to this yet and just wondered if anyone could share their experiences/knowledge

Anywhere from 2 - 4 weeks of complete inactivity and you can see around a 50% decrease in abilities (also varies by "system" within your body).  But it does not take much to get back to your former ability level.

Key thing to remember is to take it slow coming back and keep your effort in the recovery/easy pace range until you have built some fitness back up.

Daniels (Jack Daniels - running coach) has a really good section in his book about returning from inactivity or injury and how to approach it.  I'm sure there are plenty of others as well.

I am just coming off six weeks of rest from running and 3 weeks from swimming and cycling. I've had my first workouts this week and I've lost a lot of fitness. It is very frustrating but I am thrilled to be able to train again.

I hope that you are able to start back into things soon. Hang in there. I found that even going for a walk or doing some stretching was helpful because I felt I was at least doing something positive.
Good luck.

I lost three weeks starting about Christmas time due to an ongoing Sciatic nerve issue.  However, I did some light weight training during the off time ((5 lbs dumb bell swim motion & curls 400 reps (sets of 100) twice per day.  Now I am just starting to ride and swim again.  My bike circuit lap times only increased a few seconds, however my swimming distance vs fatigue was a little more noticeable. I attribute this reduction in performance more to the ongoing Sciatic pain in my leg and foot rather than loss of muscle tone.

You will be fine, just don't try to over do it.  Started out slow and you will come right back sooner than you think.  After a week or two, challenge one of your normal SBR times and you will be surprised how fast you are.

Good luck.

Note the bolded part of what Rick said... especially when it comes to running.  When you are coming back after an injury, or a break, or whatever, pace does not matter.

Just get back out there again, and you'll be back to where you were.

For me it has depended on my age.  The older I've gotten, the longer it has taken to regain fitness.  It used to be 1-2 weeks back in my 20's.  Thirty years later it takes many months.  Back in my late 30's after a long layoff I recall timing a single mile in 7:14 and was very discouraged at how much it took out of me.  A year later I ran a marathon and averaged a faster pace for the full distance.  Your fitness will come back.

I had sugery in late '07 and was off running and swimming 6 weeks and was able to ride trainer easy after 3...so basically 6 weeks off.

It took me about 2 months to get back to where I was swimming, maybe 4-5 weeks cycling, and running I PBed 5K 3.5 months after I started training again. Running took the longest to come back but it did. I was 46 and had been training consistently since '05.

I've heard you lose it faster the newer you are to sport and the longer your endurance background is you lose it less fast.

It will come back and yes take it easy when you start up. I recall first week I ran I think I did 3 runs that were 10-15' long.

I could not swim for 3 months due to hurricane Gustav tearing up the YMCA. I am struggling big time getting back both speed and endurance. If you have a good base, running and cycling come back pretty quick.
