I was talking to some guys at work that just had PRK done about how long till I can start working out and they said about a month. Then I asked about getting into a pool and they said they thought 3-6 months. Does this sound about right? Im scheduled for mid April which would totally screw my season over if I cant swim till July/October.

Of course you will want to ask your surgeon because there are different guidelines they may follow, but I believe it is usually one month before swimming to avoid risk of infection. That is of course if your corneas have completely healed by then. This will be checked at your one month check up and then just ask the doc if you are okay to swim (with goggles) Most patients are just fine at that point, but we have them wait 3 months before any contact sports (like open water swimming in a group start) or surfing.

Good luck!

Why PRK and not LASIK? The healing time with LASIK is much quicker. Once the corneal epithlium is healed (1-3 days) there is no increased risk of infection. We recommend no swimming for 2 weeks after LASIK and around 1 month for PRK depending on the patient. We do this more for the fact that we do not want the patient rubbing the eyes not as much for risk of infection. I would double the time for Hot Tubs however.
