Subject: PROPLUGS? Answers re:earplugs, please?

Q1: Are earplugs meant to keep ALL the water out or just most of it?

Q2: IF I keep feeling like water is leaking in, is that accurate, or is it just that a little water sounds like a lot in the ear canal?

Q3: (Pardon my frustration) Bought a pair of Doc's ProPlugs ear plugs, tried them today, and the plugs let water in every flipturn I tried. This must mean they don't fit, correct?

I will be calling Denver Divers to see what can be done about replacing/exchange.  I just want to understand more about plugs, the how, the why, the physiological necessity for them, etc.  My ears are not overly large, yet tend to scoop up water like wine cups when breathing or flipping. The last time I forgot my plugs I attempted swimming w/o and promptly gave up, pain was too much. More recently have mitigated swimmer's ear with rubbing alcohol, after ears itchy and aching became an issue.

HELP?

I used an earplug in my left ear for the first time today.  Lately if I get water in my left ear I get dizzy and can't walk a straight line when i get out of the pool.

It does say on the instructions how to put them in and how to get them to seal (I got these at walmart) pull up on the ear with the opposite hand, then place in the plug. All that said, I do not know how to do flip turns, so I do not have the force you do.  I did not have any water in  my ear this time though..... and so I was not dizzy when I got out.
I hope someone can help you more than I can !

I think that earplugs will generally keep out most but not all water. I use custom earplug I had made by my audiologist. They are the most comfortable I've tried.

Why are you wearing earplugs?

I was just wondering. I don't get pain, just hate when I have water in there for a while afterwards.

My custom plugs were about $80 through my audiologist.

Interesting, I not sure seeing a specialist is worth it for something as simple as ear plugs. Did your audiologist happen to mention whether or not ear plugs with swimming are meant to keep all the water out?  or just some of it?

I'm going back to the Dive shop to exchange the plugs I got, hopefully things'll work with a better fit...OR I'll just suck it up, use rubbing alcohol everytime I get outta the pool.

I was doing OK with swimming ear plugs from a swim shop except I found them kinda uncomfortable.

I doubt that any plug keeps out all of the water.

I use Speedo silicone plugs. You kind of have to work them in but they keep all the water out. I tried TYR's but they were much harder silicone and didn't mold as well as the Speedo's. They are only about $4 for two pairs so it might be worth trying.

I use earplugs because it helps with motion sickness.  I get that at Walmart.  They are silicone with little flanges (like arrows) and seal just fine.  I think the brand name is Macs

*sigh* I doubt it too, but I s'pose it'd be next to impossible to keep it ALL out without a diving helmet.

Thanks for the replies you all, I appreciate all the recommendations for brands!

I buy mine at target. They are a squishy orange plug made for children. I have been swimming with them for over a year. I really, really like them. It is rare I get water in my ear. I also use them for trips or when DH is snoring.

.OR I'll just suck it up, use rubbing alcohol everytime I get outta the pool.

If I remember correctly, I read that rubbing alcohol dries your ears out too much, which cause the skin inside them to crack, which leads to more chance of infection.

I've seen recipes for homemade versions of commercial eardrops using alcohol, glycerin and white vinegar to dry the ear while preventing the over-drying effect of alcohol. You could probably google it for the exact proportions of each.

#1 if keeping water from your ears is a medical issue go over any tips with your doctor.

That said ear plugs by themselves can leak and any water that leaks in gets trapped behind them which can be hard to detect and cause trouble.

A swim cap over the ear plugs allows much more protection. Theres ways to keep ears really dry with a cap and ear plug combo. The Macks silicon ear plugs are very cheap and work well with a cap. Caps can be more or less water tight depending on the size and style. The Macks are rolled into a ball then put in the ear canal.

I double cap myself and it keeps water from my ears and hair both with out any ear plugs. I use a silicon cap pulled low over my ears then a bubble strap cap over that. Any leaks I can feel and let the slight amount of water out. The bubble caps review can be seen under gear reviews swim caps on the top right of this page next to forums.

A swim band under a cap can also work with or without earplugs. Experimenting will give you a solution. I would not rely only on ear plugs alone if you really want to keep your ears dry.

See these pages: http://www.geocities.com/lapswimr/swimband.html

I have used the silicone Macks plugs for years. (I am prone to ear infections) They are comfortable, cheap and reuseable a few times. I can tell it's time to toss the set when they don't firmly stick in place. Available at most pharmacy type stores.

You're right about the drying, I have been using a homeopathic ear-ache/swimmer's ear remedy also.  So after drying I add these drops and it seems to keep all under control.  I look forward to trying different swim cap combos---whatever keeps me in the pool!
