I know many of get so set in the training we are doing and race we are doing it for, but remember to reflect and look back on why you do triathlons.

For me I see triathlons as a cronicle of lifes events.

Getting married.
Swim: Preparing to propose, getting the ring, setting out the plan (it can be one of the scarest parts, but once you get of your knee (out of the water) you see why you did it.
T1: A chase to catch your breath, but now it gets crazy because you need to change you mind from the proposal to the wedding planning
Bike: Flies by preparing for the wedding, you have people giving you advice who have gotten married, the tough parts of the preparation are like hill climbs, she doesn't feel like you are doing enough
T2: Rehearsal dinner, You have come so far and now you are getting the end, but now you have to give gifts, do toast, put on your shoes all at the same time
Run: Wedding day, things are happening all around you, you are focused on what you need to do, but things are swirling around you, and you just want to get the finish
Finish: The rings are exchanged and the kiss, emotional ending to a wild race.

I know some will hate that wedding triathlon metaphor, but the simolism with life is what keeps me interested in triathlons.  And it doesn't have to be a wedding it can be anything?

I see it like having a baby. Fun, pain, work, and expenses ;) But worth it all after it has arrived.

I started to train for a triathlon because I didn't want to loose my base after training 5 months for a marathon. I didn't want to mess with my knees, I wanted something to alternate the running. I am a goal oriented person, I need the challenge to keep going. I wanted to run another marathon in January 2006 and beat the clock by at least 20 minutes. Little I knew this training is tough! and now I am completely hooked! and this is a big statement coming from someone who totally dislikes bikes (well, they are winning me over).
Congratulations on your wedding!

My wife is a very good runner - marathons and such. She got back into it a couple years ago after the kids were more sulf-sufficient. She has inspired me to get back to my athletic self, too. Now it's my turn - the job, income, and life in general have stabilized -- and I miss competing. Better late than never!!

I love that I can challenge myself, while at the same time competing with others. I am very competitive, so I know that I have to work hard to be satisfied on race day! Also to impress girls! HA!

I do triathlons because I love the lifestyle.  Racing is just like taking an "exam" at school, but training is really my life.  Everything I do revolves around training.  I constantly think about it, what should I be eating, how much sleep can I get, when will I get my workouts in, what will the weather be like, are there sales on equipment, etc. etc. and so forth.

I simply do it because I love the lifestyle I've had over the past 8 years.

Ok, I confess my motive is less lofty than most... but perhaps more entertaining.

too funny. my 64 year old mother just did her first tri (an indoor). afterwards, i asked her if she would do another, and she said 'maybe...its a bit like asking someone who just had a baby if they want to go through labor again. in a few days i'll probably say yes, but right now i'm ready for a nap!'

Autmn, that is so great about your mom!

CLLinIA, that peom is great! Very Suess-ish. Did you write that?

I decided to try a tri because I like the challange of it, and I do well when I'm following a program. My gym is boring (getting ready for renovation) and I focus well if I'm following something.

We do triathlon because we know that despite our weaknesses, our problems, and our failings; despite all that we perceive to be wrong in the world, we and the world around us are extraordinary. And triathlon celebrates that.
