On a group ride last weekend, I kept a faster pace than I have been previously doing, afterwards, and for a couple days the lower, outside, behind knee hurt (a lot).

I deal with ITB issues on my OTHER leg, and it is not the same pain (I am aware it can manifest in other ways, so I have not ruled this out)

Is this an issues of training on the big ring too much too fast, try lower gear with higher RPMS this weekend?

I'm relatively new to road biking, and was previously doing all indoor training, until I got my bike (first season of tri).  The distance/duration I've increased is not too much at once, but I'm wondering if maybe the added resistance of actually on a real bike was too much and I' should notch it down for a few weeks and gradually get to B+.

Couple things I personally would look at to analyze it.

1) Have you been fit correctly to the bike?

2) If you have clipless pedals, who set up your cleats?

3) Quite often when people get out of their comfort zone they will point their toes down which ends up flexing the calf a lot and imbalances the legs.  This often leads to minor injuries.

I did - I had it professionally fit from my LBS.  I did my own cleats, at the time, my LBS did not do cleat fitting, they just set up the capability to do so.

Is this worth doing?

If your leg wants to do one thing and your cleat is not in a position to let it do it, then there can be complications.

What sort of pedals?

When you run, are you pigeon toed (Toes point in), duck footed (Toes point out), or straight? Do your cleats reflect this? Where does the pedal spindle sit in relation to the ball of your foot?

John (And hasn't anyone ever heard of tinyurl?)

Point out.  The pedal spindle question I do not know the answer to - I suspect this thread gave a decent next step: get cleats fit.
