Subject: 1st "long run" in 15 years today

It was beautiful and sunny today, so I decided to do my long run outside.  It was 20 degrees, but it felt fairly nice until the end.  Some lessons learned:

1. Hats will freeze because of sweat. (edges over ears were frozen)

2. When you plan to run for an hour for your long run, and you average 9:15 miles on "normal runs," don't pick a 8.5 mile loop route.

3.  Walking sounds great until the wind-chill picks up.  It then doesn't matter how sore your legs are - warmth is more important.

4.  Hills are murder on the long run.  I had a total of 1004 feet of climbing.  It doesn't seem like much in a car, but I got a new perspective today.

5.  All of you helped while I was out there.  The urge to push was tempered by everyone here always talking about staying within limits to avoid injury.  Also, I was buoyed by the fact many of you run a lot faster and longer, so I knew my mind is what is holding me back the most.  Just HTFU, right?

6. I can't wait until next week's long run!!

Congrats on breaking an 8miler.  I imagine you will be at 10 in a few weeks...good job.  It's hard to gather much data from your "lap data"...may I suggest the "Auto Lap" function?  It makes it so that you get the mile splits.  It helps to see where your HR jumps up and how steady your pace was.

I feel for you guys in the cold...here in LA I just ran down hollywood blvd in shorts and a tank! Cool

Here is some lap data (only shows the first 65 minutes):

Congrats! I just did my first 8+ mile run tonight as well. It was a bit warmer than you experienced fortunately, with probably about the same amount of elevation change.

Be very carefull. The high you get from this sport is more addictive than any drug know man or woman.

Congrats.

I hope there is more LSD ( long slow duration ) in your future!

Nice job!!

Question on #1:  What kind of hat were you wearing?  I don't usually have a problem with getting ice on my hat.  I typically wear a poly beanie.

Comment on #2:  You boob!Smile

Question on #3:  Do you have a wicking wind jacket?  That would help with your walking and not freezing to death.

Comment on #4:  An old cross-country teammate of mine stated the "law of hills" like this:  "What goes down, must come up."

Again, nice job on this accomplishment.

Answers:

1.  Cotton knit...yeah, I should have known better.  It only froze on the sections where the Ipod earphones took it away from my head.  Entire hat was soaked, but only the areas not directly touching my head froze.

2.  Yeah, and my coach didn't like it much either...I got the 10% rule third degree...much deserved!

3.  I have a North Face running jacket that is breathable, but not much for blocking the wind I guess.  The worst part was the UA cold gear compression shirt which was soaked with sweat.

4. I live in a valley...any run or bike longer than a couple of miles is going to mean going out of the valley, which means some decent hills.  I have a 1700 foot "mountain" I can go up too, but I haven't had the cojones to do that running or biking yet.    At least those hills should make my tri in Florida (May) feel pretty sweet in comparison.
