Subject: Bad sensitive skin or allergic to chlorine?
I need help!  I work in a hospital and live in an area right now that is extremely dry.  I am swimming a lot, 3 or 4 times a week per my Ironman training plan.  My back, arms, and legs are itching and dry.  When I workout sometimes and I sweat it feels like razor blades on my skin.  I am moisturizing twice a day with Eucerine (sp?) but it is not helping a whole lot.  Could it be a chlorine reaction or just really dry sensitive skin?  Please help before I itch and burn to death!

I don't know but I break out bad when I swim. If I take a few days off everything clears up. I also notice that when I swim and then bike or run immediately after I sweat like a hog. I don't know if all that pool water gets locked up in you pores or what.

I get really really dry skin from the chlorine.   I switched to the Eucerin Calming Cream and it takes away the itchy feeling and is a little more moisturizing than the regular Eucerin.  Might be worth a try.

If you have a Body Shop nearby, you might try their Hemp Hand Cream...totally worth the money and will last forever...or you could just have it shipped.  The stuff is amazing.

I've been having the same problem lately, esp with swims >>30 minutes and sensitive skin.   I've started to shower thoroughly before my swims the last couple times, rather than just rinse a bit, rub the water into my skin---I read that the follicles will take up less Chlorinated water if already inundated with non-Cl water. It seems to have helped.

I also started taking my nice shower gel with me to the gym, I will shut off the water for as long as it takes me to lather up, then let it sit for a minute or so (aloe based all natural shower gel, HUGO I think). Post shower, make sure to take my time rubbing in the Eucerin from the little tub my hubby gifted me for xmas.  I also started using hypo-allergenic shampoo/conditioner, there's no pretty fragrance but it done wonders for the dry scalp & hair.

That's what's worked for this itchy-irritated-chlorinated triathlete so far!

edit: Oh, and Aquaphor is an a** kickin' hand cream also, by Eucerin.

I have horribly dry skin.  It itches and burns in the winter.

I use Neutrogena Body Oil "first"... and then put Cerave lotion on top of that... and it helps a ton!!  Cerave is a new lotion that was recommended by my dermatologist.

My legs are the worst.  They can itch and burn so bad.... but when I use the combination of these two (above), it helps so much.

Do you have access to a saline pool instead?

Just to add my two cents, I have bad allergies to some of the chemicals used to treat public pools.  I've found that if I steam after swimming, and also take a daily antihistimine (Claratin for me) it helps a lot.

Dry air, lots of pool time, hot showers...recipe for dry skin.  I don't think it's you, though it affects some people more than others.  Try different moisturizers too to see if you find one that's a better fit.

x2 on the TriSwim.  I found that I had itchy, sensitive skin after a swim workout.  The problem was notably worse if I did a run/bike workout right before or after.  I've been using TriSwim for a couple months now and it's been great.  I don't smell strongly of chlorine anymore and the itching is gone.

I have taken the advice given on bt and get soaked in the shower before I swim.  then use my body wash from home in the shower (what they use at the gym is too drying).  then use body oil rather than lotion when I am done.

It's been suggested to me to use dermaswim pro.  It's a chlorine barrier type lotion you put on before you swim . I ordered it but have not received it yet.  I got an itchy rash last week from the pool, so did one of the guards.  It was aweful, I was in spin class that night scratching like I was dirty or something, my arms and chest were the worst.

Also body oil helps me more than lotions (nalani in my mentor group uses neutrogena body oil, I could only find Palmers where I am).....

I am much improved by pre showering has helped alot. Then after the hot tub / shower let the mostirzing soap stay on for a minute before rinsing.
Now my nasal passages are another story/thread. I have reduced the nasal reaction by using saline irragtion spray but still some head clogging.
