Right now, it feels like never But, when I was out running on sunday, I saw lots of people out riding their bikes. Granted, it looked like they were dressed for the ski slopes, but they were out there! I think some people just go out as long as their are dry roads. I'm going to wait until the temp hits 40. |

Master 2202 Canton, Michigan | Subject: RE: When do we get to go outside and ride??? My HIM plan started in Feb last year I built mental toughness riding that damn thing at work in a garage looking out the window and listening to the radio. It was tough! This year I have my bike at home and have the wonder of DVR and video on demand and it will be easier. I used to ride my MTB as a commuter several years ago and use Sporthill products for winter weather and have been happy with it. The big issue is it's not cheap, but it will last for years. Look at the link and sign up for there newsletter or whatever they call it and you will get notified of specials. TwoHearted and always order things on clearance with discount coupons so the price isn't terrible. http://www.milemarkersports.com/ |

More than that. Think base-wicking layer/second warmer layer/windproof layer on top. On bottom, you could get away with some good tights. On your head, get a balaklava and also get some good gloves (or layer base gloves with mittens). Lastly, get you some neoprene booties or some of those chemical foot warmers. I've ridden in this getup at 32 degrees. It was sunny, but it was 32. |

I have been really good and run out in the cold this winter. I am just not sure I want to bike out in it! |

Master 1390 Ferndale, MI | Subject: RE: When do we get to go outside and ride??? You know, it's much like running in this. As long as you layer and have good wind protection, it isn't bad. Once you get moving, you'll work up a sweat, so just make sure to cover the skin good.
Now I'm wondering if I could get out later this week. Sunny and 40!! |

Expert 1195 Shelby Twp | Subject: RE: When do we get to go outside and ride??? I started my first HIM training plan a couple years ago in March also. (for Steelhead also) We rode in the 30's/40's, but did it on our mountain bikes for time due to residual salt, etc. By end of March/into April, we were back out on the road. It does suck when its under 50, but its doable. Now last year training for my IM, was different. I did all of my riding from Nov-March/April on the trainer. I went up to 70+ miles on the trainer. It sucked, its true, but I hooked up my laptop and watched movies, listened to music, etc. I got used to it, but would have to get off the trainer about once a hour just to get out of that same position. Thats the thing that sucks after a hour or two on the trainer, theres no shifting, standing, climbing etc like real road training.
The first couple weeks is all a mind game. Once you get used to it, you may not like it, but you will learn to tolerate it and enjoy the music |
