Subject: Cervelo S1, best for price?

So I have a P2C, the same paint scheme as the new S1 released by Cevelo.   That aside, I have been looking for a road bike (only have a tri bike), but am not able to put down the 3500+ for the carbon soloist I have had my eye on.

SO......I am thinking of buying the S1, and just swapping out a couple components for stuff I already have, like the crank and wheelset.

QUESTION:  Can you think of a better valued bike for the performance?  Based on persons I have talked to who own the old soloist, and all the articles I have read, I am having a hard time thinking of a better value.

For 2200 thats a nice bike.  Sure its not carbon bling.  Like you pointed out the crank and wheelset should be upgraded, but you already have those.  I believe there was a recent tour stage or classic won on the aluminum frame Soloist by a CSC rider.  Could be the engine though.

Probably the engine.  But weight wise, the carbon bikes I find at that price are all around 19-20lbs, and I wonder what a stock S1 comes in at as I can not find it listed anywhere.  Anyone know???

I just bought a Cervelo S1 (well anyway its still at the shop until I finish making the payments).  It is an awesome bike with all ultegra.  The stock wheels were lousy so I upgraded to the Roval Fusee Stars (the paint scheme matched the bike too).  I also had aerobars installed on the bike.  I'm going to use this bike for road rides and triathlons.  Everyone steered me toward this bike as the "best bang for the buck."

I'm figuring the weight on mine is around 19-20 pounds.

I have a Team Soloist with Ultegra drive train, except a FSA SLK Carbon crank, and Easton Circuit wheels (1650 grams). I checked the weight on the scale at my LBS. It weighed 18.2 Lbs including pedals and one water bottle cage, but no aerobars. My aerobars had 1.3 lbs.

You might consider just getting the frameset instead of a complete bike since you already have the crank and wheels. The framset goes for around $1200. I bought my frameset at end of the model year and only paid $900.

I would have to agree, if your going to swap out parts for stuff you already have just buy the frameset.  You will probably find it will be more cost effective than buying a factory spec'd bike.

One of my friends had this exact same question... he ended up buying a Soloist Team for $ 1700 and is very happy with it.

Good luck and all I've seen points to the S1/Soloist Team as being the best bang for buck.

The S1 is a great bike. To say it's the best value might be a stretch.

Even if you plan on using existing cranks and wheels you're likely better off buying the complete bike rather then buying the frameset. Cranks and wheels aside you'll have a tough time buying Ultegra SL and 3T quality components for under $1k.

Some shops will give you a credit in exchange for the cranks and wheels.

I just posted in someone else's question about Felt v. Cervelo.

I have an '08 Soloist Team (the old S1) and it is the most versitile bike for road riding and triathlon.  Hands down.
