Subject: Ultra Question
I am thinking about doing an Ultra. It would be my first and it is a 50k. I was wondering what kind of plans there are out there for an ultra because I have no idea on how to train for one. The second question I have is that I am also doing my first IM this year and it is at the end of August. The Ultra I was looking at is at the end of October. Is it crazy to even think about doing the Ultra after the Ironman. I could see myself not wanting to run for a while after doing the IM. But I would have all that fitness from a summer of training. What are your guys thoughts. Thanks.

we might be in the same boat, I"m doing IMKY at the end of august and I"m seriously thinking doing sunmart 50 mile trail run with I think is the end of November this year,,, It really depends on how my IM marathon goes, though.

I"ve asked a few people that have done the longer stuff and the big thing I get is just get used to spending time on your feet...

So there's THREE of us nutty IMKYers thinking about extending the insanity?

Thanks for asking the question!

My friends who do ultras and triathlon say that recovery time is really important ... they don't train much differently than for marathons except that they might throw in a slow marathon as a training run, extend the time between long runs, and, depending on the actual distance (say, 50 miles instead of 50K, do a slow 50K a few weeks before).

A couple of them never train past the marathon distance but do the ultra-ultras anyway: they say it's important to keep up the maintenance running, though.

I'd suggest you sign up after your IM to see how you recover.

It took me awhile to recover and until I finally took 4 weeks off running did I feel okay. No way could I have done a 50K run 2-3 months after an IM but that is me.

That's the beauty of most ultras; there aren't crowds of people dying to sign up so it's easy to get in shortly beforehand

Yeah, I might be sitting on my couch staring absently at a blank TV eating potato chips for a while after the IM ...

That's a good idea to wait and sign up later. The thing probably won't sell out and I will see how I feel. I am doing IMKY and I was looking at the North Face Endurance series. I would be doing the Madison one. After the IM I could see not having as much desire to do it as I have now sitting at the computer in Feb.

I thought you we looking at the Chicago 50/50 for a minute there.

50k training is not much different from marathon training.  sometimes people will do 22 miles vs 20 miles.  Chicago 50/50 is done 3 weeks after the marathon so you can use the marathon as your long run.

I just looked at that race and I think the North Face Challenge looks a little more interesting. I am not sure how thrilled I am with a 3 loop course. That would be pretty rough having to run away from the finish line on the start of the 3rd loop. Plus some of it is on pavement. I like the dirt better.

Your base should be solid after an IM if you hit all your workouts and are doing at least a moderate plan.  Myself and two others did a 50k about a month after MOO in 07.  Basically, I took two weeks off and maybe ran two 90 min runs in the following two weeks with some other stuff.  My plan was just to enjoy the fall weather and no performance expecations other than to finish.  Might jump up to a 50 miler in October depending on how recovery from MOO goes this year though I intend on running a more aggressive IM so that whole recovery might be a completely different story vs a conservatively paced first IM.

Not sure when North Face is, but this is the one I did.  Fun race, very hilly and technical, probably 150 people tops between the 50k and 50 miler.

I did my first 50K a few years back. It was all on asphalt and it was 15.5 miles out, 15.5 miles back. Not every exciting, but regardless it was a 50K.

Training wise, I trained as if I was doing a marathon. My longest run was a marathon about two weeks out.

After doing my first IM I was more mentally tired than physically to be honest. Granted, I ended up walking a lot of the marathon....

I didn't really start training again for about 6 or so weeks after it. So, I agree, sign up after your IM and see how you're feeling.

I agree with what others have said. Sign up after doing the IM. You will be in good shape after the IM and will need to just keep up some running to be ready for the 50k.

I did IMLP in 2007 then I did the Virginia Double Ironman in October of that year.  I found it difficult to keep and improve my fitness from the end of July to the middle of October.  I think I would have enjoyed it more if the Double was a month after the Ironman.

I'm going to get a chance to see if this theory is right.  I'm doing Wisconcin this year, then I'm going to attempt the Virginia Triple Ironman one month later.

I had a good friend run the 50K at the North Face Endurance Challenge in Madison after finishing IMWI about 6 weeks beforehand. I also did IMWI but only ran the half marathon at the NF Endurance Challenge. I know that his training postIM was similar to that of jszat and friends. My training for the half was much different as I had surgery three weeks after the IM that kept me from running for 2 weeks. I just did a 60 or 90 minute run the week before the race. I am thinking if trying for the 50K this year (also signed up for IMWI). I just need to get things sorted out with my coach as I also want to run Tecumsah and have signed up for the Goofy challenge in Jan 2009. Too many races and not enough time.

You may not want periodically check the registration list for the race. It did close last year and it is expected to closer quicker this year.
