Subject: My new longest trainer ride... 3 hours
For some reason, I got it in my head that I wanted to do a three hour trainer ride sometime within the next week. I have the week off and my daughter has been sleeping later, so I decided that today would be the day. I started riding at 4:30am.

This is the longest trainer ride I have ever done; and I completely believe that it is way harder if not physically, definitely mentally than a three hour ride out on the streets. At least outside you can coast once in a while...

Am I in the majority for thinking this, or am I way out of line???

I did this ride on my road bike since I have come to the realization that it is much more comfortable on the trainer than the tri bike. I'm not sure why that it, but I love the tri bike on the road and it is soooooo comfortable, but why doesn't that transfer when on the trainer?

I used the first hour as kind of a long warm up, watching Lou Dobbs and gently spinning on relatively easy gears and keeping my HR low. My entire focus was duration, not speed, I simply wanted to get time in the saddle. The next two hours, I worked much harder, mostly staying above 18 mph, but never really faster than 18.5. (I have a computer sensor hooked up to my rear wheel... I know that's not a true relection of outside distance and speed, but at least it's an idea and at least it provides some motivation.) I watched sportcenter during the second hour and got up out of the saddle at every commercial break. For the third hour, I did some reading, which I know to the purists out there probably isn't the best thing as we are supposed to be focused on riding the whole time, but whatever. My only real concern with that is the stress I am putting on my eye muscles to keep refocusing as I move around ever so slightly.

Overall, I am pleased with this effort and where I am right now in my training and fitness. It's nice to have a 3 hour ride under my belt to go along with the 9 mile run and 2000+ yard non-stop swim already this year. Maybe I'll do a four hour ride next weekend... Not really gonna happen, I don't see myself doing any more than 2 hours on the trainer in the coming months. This is just something I wanted to do.

Well, I'm impressed.  It requires everything within me to complete a 1 hour trainer spin.  Actually, I did a few 90 minute sessions last season, but they were tough.  Luckily my triathlon club has a Wednesday morning spin group.  The time goes by much more quickly when you have someone to talk to.

Nice work on the three hours. Yes, 3 hours on a trainer is way harder than a 3 hour jaunt outside. Your legs are spinning all the time..you literally never stop, never have a stop sign, stop light, ...nothing. Your legs are in motion constantly. That's not easy. And once you factor in the mental toughness to sit there for that long without any changing scenery..its tough. I always find the first hour harder than the second for some reason, but I am usually like that with my workouts. My first interval is harder on me mentally than my last.

Slacker!

Seriously, my longest is 1:45 which I did two days ago.  I did 2:15 on the rollers back in 1997 when I raced bikes.  You got through the 3:00 similarly to what I would do which is to take the first hour easy.  I would probably have slacked off the last 0:30 too.  I would agree that the trainer can be harder to outdoors even physically if you wrap your mind around good efforts.  I did very well last year in my first race (April) and the bike leg in that race was my first ride OFF the trainer in over 5 months.  I did not even ride the bike to warm up for the race.

AS ALWAYS, the best thing for our training is usually the thing that motivates us.  Good job.

Edit: Someday I'll spell check then post.

For me, watching an entire hour of Sportscenter is waaaaay harder than doing a 3 hour trainer ride

Fantastic job. I did a 2:20 ride last month on the drainer.... ugh.

That's a long, long time and you did great.

I've got a very difficult century in May and I'm thinking about a LONG trainer ride before then... of course a LONG trainer ride to me is 1.5 - 2hrs so I'm gonna have to change my thinking. Considering something extreme.

Congrats !

I had to do a 2:45 trainer ride last friday because i was leaving town for the weekend (read: no long rides) and it was raining. I actually didn't mind it that much. To keep it interested i used generally 30-45min wu/cd periods w/ a couple 10min med/hard efforts. then i had 2x (5'hard/5'rest, 4'hard/4'rest, 3, 2, 1)  which keep it interesting. Also, 3 and a half episodes of Lost didn't hurt haha.

The mental toughness to do that is amazing, Mike.  Now 45 minutes on the trainer is going to feel like 10.

My trainer longest time is 1:31 ... so I'm halfway there

If only some person or company would inventy batteries that could run our house and we could charge these batteries everytime we were on the trainer.  If that were the case you would have cut your electric and heating bill in half for this month!

You're going to destroy the Montauk course this year at this rate!  Fantastic Job

I have been spending a lot of quality time with the trainer this winter. I have found that most days after I subtract work, 3 kiddos, a hot wife (I think she reads my posts) ,sleep and open hours at the YMCA I am often left with the trainer or nothing. I am actually quite used to it. I have been able to get in 1-2 hours a few nights a week. My record is 3.5 hours while watching Ohio State screw the pooch against Texas ( I was riding very hard the last 30 minutes and hydrating with beer- quite the odd training regimen). I am almost going to be sad when I have to start worrying about potholes, cars, people, dogs, crashing, flat tires, etc.

I would have a spectacular bruise on my forehead from whacking my head into the handlebars starting about 45 minutes in.

Well done!

OK - everyone is going to think I am crazy. Last year I did 100 miles on the trainer. I think I watched 3 movies plus some other TV. It was super windy outside and I didn't feel like battling 40+mph winds. I remember this because I don't think I ever want to do that again. I actually did a 3 mile run after that 100 mile trainer ride.

I've heard/read that the 18lb flywheel of a KK Pro setup allows coasting, anyone have one or try it? And if it does work well, can ya coast of for two of a 3 hour ride?

I did 2 hours last weekend or the outside option was 50 miles. My coach is upping my cycling starting next week so I sure hope I can get outside.

My old coach would make longer trainer rides with lots of variety with 15' sections doing different things. New coach has me ride steady power and cadence then maybe do an interval or two thrown in...takes a lot more mental toughness.

One of the reasons I didn't do the Sebring 24 hour race is folks recommended that I do 8-17 hour trainer rides to prepare...ah that didn't sound so fun for me.

I guess my longest has been about 2.5 on the trainer - For anything over 90 minutes, I usually rent a good, shoot-em-up movie of some sort to pass the time away...  I'll catch myself during the really intense parts of the movie peddling at about 120 RPMs though

I did 2 1/2 hours today.  Not entirely brutal because I kept my mind occupied by watching the '07 and '08 IM Championships.  It gives me some perspective that I'm not hurting as much as they are.

Nice work. I have a sick plan to do a century ride on my trainer this spring. I'll be the only one at home and will get off every 20 miles for a snack and potty break, just like the real thing. It seems that getting the 100 in early will set a good tone for the racing season.
