Subject: Moving to OKC

Hi All -

Today I'm accepting a job in Oklahoma City.    After 2+ years of tris and a few half-marathons 2005-2007 and am back running (a little!) and have come back to BT.  It would be great to get back into tri when I'm settled.

Are there any OKC triathletes around for advice - places to bike, swim, etc.?   If so, please introduce yourselves!  My arrival date will be sometime in June.

Just read your post and congratulations on your new job!  I came to Oklahoma City from Colorado in 1997 and have slowly worked into some running and triathlon groups.  There are a lot of great people here.  The big triathlon here is the RedMan www.redmantriathlon.com in September and the big run is the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon which was this last weekend.  There are several running groups from Norman to Edmond and a lot of fun events.  Most people say the best place to run or bike is at Lake Hefner.  It's a 9.5 mile loop on the North side of the city.  You'll see a lot of people training there over the summer.  You can't swim in it though...except for the day of the RedMan.  I think the best place to open water swim is at Lake Arcadia...east of Edmond.  There are several gyms in the area that have lap pools.  I use the pool at Aspen Athletic Club.  Congratulations again and look forward to seeing you on the trails.

Welcome to the City.

Tri OKC is a great group.  We meet once a month and you can find our information on our website triokc.org.  Check out our message board as well for current information about all the club events and other south midwest region races.  Lake Hefner is a pretty good place if you live on the North side of town.  Some of us live south in Moore, South OKC or Norman and we've got rides down here (the bicycle league of Norman rides) and we're close to Lake Draper with its trails.  Club membership is very cheap and you get a discount on all your club races with membership, so it ends up paying for itself.  Hope to see you at the next meeting

If you want to head down to the arbuckle mountain area in Davis, we would be glad to show you some of God's country in Oklahoma.  I know how you feel I spent 2 years in Chicago and 1 year in Colorado, before all this computer stuff and besides from the people at work it was hard to find people who like what we do.  My brother and I used to be into this stuff pretty hard, now have been married for about 5 years and need to shed some pounds. Bought road bike last week, ready to go.

Hey man, glad you are here. OKC has gotten a bad wrap with this obesity study. It really is a great place to live. I have been in your situation as well and have moved to Newcastle, Ok. Finding people who like to R/B/S is difficult but if you hit those resources you will find PLENTY!  Good luck!

Look forward to seeing you on the road/pool!

x2 on Lake Arcadia as place for OWS and on TriOKC as resource to locate training companions.

If you're ready, there is a short sprint at Lake Arcadia in Edmond on August 16 - Hillapalooza.  S400m/B10/R2.  Check it out at http://hillapaloozatriathlon.com/.

Wow - glad I checked back, great suggestions all!    I'm settled in now, living on the northwest side of town.

My attempts to forray back into running have not worked out well, so for  now I'm postponing my return to tri and focusing on cycling for the rest of this year.  Did my first ride with the Oklahoma Bicycle Society on Saturday and enjoyed that.

I'll still be hanging around the edges of the tri scene though - checking out triokc.org & volunteering at RedMan for sure!
