Cead_Mille_Failte - 2009-03-25 1:12 AM VICOTRY! I got up at the crack of dawn (6:30am) and went swimming!!!!! What is more, it's 3p, here now and I'm actually ok. Overall a good day so far apart from my blood tests. Now I went to the Student Health Centre and met the same doctor who recommended the tests. Unfortunately, little did I know it's gonna turn into somewhat horryfing experience. She was ready to go, needle went and..... nothing happens- no blood coming out. She couldn't find my vein for a while and was fiddling the needle inside my arm. That was the moment when I thought I'm gonna collapse! Finally she managed to find a vein so I should get the results next week. Daisy- great news re gym!

Nice one on getting up so early, it's so hard.  Argh about the needle, why are some people so crap at taking blood?  I have great veins and don't mind needles so when I worked in a research lab, everyone knew I was on tap if they needed a control sample.  I eventually would only give it in return for chocolate and had a sliding scale, 10ml = a mars bar, 50ml = big block of Dairy Milk.  There would occassionally be some duffer like yours who would leave bruises, they could come at me with boxes of Lindt and I wouldn't let them anywhere near me :-)

The only time I have had a problem with someone and my veins was the 1st Gulf War.  This ninny couldn't find her butt with both hands.  Comet could hit a vein on me with out a problem.

Great news... Grades are in, and though I didn't get my 4.0, I'm happy with the straight B's. It could've been a lot worse! Also, I graduated with one of my degrees. And now I get a second degree with just one more class. Secondly, the scale has been really kind to me lately. This morning was at 187.6, so still sub-190, despite my little binge last night. Had two helpings of spaghetti, 2 slices of lasagna, a piece of garlic toast, a bowl of Navy Bean soup, a bunch of protein water and I was still hungry when I went to bed. Now all I have to do is get back to the gym!

Well done on your results - CONGRATS!!! So, any ideas what to do next?

Yeah, sleep in to 3 pm, at least for the next 5-6 days. Then it's on to degree #2, which I'll get in the next 12-13 wks.

First is: Liberal Arts and Sciences. Associate of Arts
Second is: Liberal Arts and Sciences. Associate of Arts w/Psychology Emphasis

Basically, I take one more class (this coming qtr), and they send me a second degree. So why not, right?

That sleeping long sounds like a FANTASTIC plan! And very good decision on the second degree. So what exactly is Associate of Arts? Is is like our BA or MA?

damn whish i could do that! i just get my BEng this year (has a nice ring to it?)

BEng has a really nice ring to it! It's nearly like a word on its own - who knows, maybe in a 100 years... Also, I could never ever get a BEng - I'd be kicked out after the first week

Another even greater victory - I got up at 7am (as usual during the week-that's not the news), went to UL Arena (gym) and was running outside at 8am. That's an absolute PB in the history of my early runs because until now the earliest I did wa sabout 9:45am. So yes I'm quite proud of myself adn I really enjoyed it too. I also figured that once I manage to start running even earlier, say 7:30 or even 7:00 (yup, I'm reaching for the starts here ), I could then go and do some core and weights afterwards. Also if the weather is really bad (and it's bound to happen sooner rather than later) we have 400m indoors track too.

Unfortunately, I was so shocked with what I was about to do in the morning (I was even slightly nauseous from stress) that I completly forgot to weigh and I always do it in the mornings. I could try tomorrow but we have a visiting professor from Belgium and my supervisor, who usually takes care of him, is gone at a conference so I'm the chosen one to take him for dinner tonight. On one hand it's great that she trusts enough to ask me to do it but she's also a bit cruel. She knows how shy I am with new people and that the whole concept of networking at conferences etc. scares me to death. Luckily, I convinced one other person to go with us so I should survive. I was also told that Eric (the professor) is really shy - if it was just the two of us at that dinner this would be simply be 2hrs or so of silence.

god i hate blood tests. Not traumatising or anything just they seem to find it hard to find a vein here too. Last time i went for a blood test they took 4 vials :|

Where do you go swimming at 6.30? is the pool open that early?!

I have gone back to me parents house for easter , which means i've had to sign up for another gym which has less equipment and generally of lower quality, and its only like 3 quid cheaper  than the one i go to at uni

Well UL Arena opens at 7am and it's a truly amazing place. We have Olympic pool with moving floor so they can accommodate lots of different sports- swimming, diving, kayaking - you name it. We have cardio studio, a few pitches for football/basketball etc., 400m indoor track, 60m. sprint track, a few smaller rooms for spinning/ aerobic classes (which run mornings-lunchtime and evenings) and your usual sauna and jacuzzi. Outside we have 4 pitches I think - one properly done for various athletics competitions. I think that's it. Oh yeah and the Munster rugby team (including the one and only Dougie Howlett whom we currently have 'on loan ' from the All Blacks) are training in UL. Yup UL is definitely a sporting campus

When ever I go in for a blood sample I tell them up front, "You have one shot at this there will be no moving the needle around in my arm and you don't get several attemps." And so far everyone has go it on the first try. Of course if you couldn't find my vains I think you had better get a new job.

Peace,

well Jo, your finishing the month really positively, I have huge admiration that you can overcome your aversion to early mornings.  UL sounds like a fantastic campus.

No change for me this week :-(  all that toast

I am still in a sad way and going up it seems.

161.2 up 1.2

but on the good side 27 days no cigs.  I decided to give myself til April to get really concerned about the weight and I have started P90X again so that should help.  I am also sore all over after back/chest ab ripper X on Mon and Plyo yesterday.

CONGRATS on the non-smoking! I know it's really tough but every day, every hour without a cigarette counts! At least that's what I was thinking just after quitting and it helped. Still have cravings when I go to the pub but they're shorter and easier to push away every day.

Thanks, trying to be positive here and also thinking about my brithday which is in 1 monthh and 1day but the party is supposed to be in exactly one month. I think that's what got me out of bed today - that and a chance of bumping into Dougie Howlett

Indeed, its quite impressive. whislt i've never smoked myself , i can understand the addiction side of things from my own point of view having been a bit too addicted to computer games at previous times, to the extent it was interfereing with my sleep etc. I'm now directing more of the time i spent playing games into working out / training and it makes me feel so much better

Well I just purchased all year membership - so I can use all the gym-like stuff, pool and have free enrty to ,morning and lunchtime classes and 1 evening class and that costs €258 for students. On the other hand if I just wanted a once-off pool entry it was €2,50 + €2 for the locker (returnable)- it was a student fee. Now admiring gorgeous rugby players and maybe getting a quick pic - pricelss (and for free)

Spinning is an amazing cycling workout and quite usueful in winter, especially in Ireland. Well, you basically cycle and the trainer tells you to turn up/down the resistance level. Sometimes you cycle while stnading or you kinda lay down on the handlebars - that really depends on who's running the class. And all that is tuned in to music. I used to be addicted to those!

Outside we have 4 pitches I think - one properly done for various athletics competitions. I think that's it. Oh yeah and the Munster rugby team (including the one and only Dougie Howlett whom we currently have 'on loan ' from the All Blacks) are training in UL. Yup UL is definitely a sporting campus

crazy that seriously is good stuff

what exactly is a spin class? i see them advertised and things at my gym and they have a room with just 30 odd bikes in (with no spokes etc) and was wondering what exactly its like, but have yet to bite the bullet because most of them clash with uni.

I used to be addicted to those!

lol tried to book myself on one at saturday 9am and it was fully booked i mean who the hell is up at that time on a weekend?!

will have to wait a while methinks s the gym at home here doesn't seem to do them

Nice! Ireland is starting to play better under Declan Kidney's watch - it's just such a shame that Munster lost him. The again, half, if not more, of the Irish team is Munster

my old gym did awesome spinning classes - cycling in darkness apart from the emergency lights with Nirvana really loud being coaching by this crazy American was so much fun .
