Stevey,  Not a change of topic at all.  I encourage questions on any part of training, nutrition or weight loss, etc..  Caddreamer is right (also showed up again) freestyle is more energy efficient, but whatever gets you through.  The bike can be anything that pedals.  My bike is a 1990 Schwinn hybrid with road tires.  Is it the fastest?  Nope, but I have beat some fast bikes with slow riders.  Is it sexy?  Nope,  but I have beat some sexy bikes with slow riders.  See a theme here?  Work on the engine and worry about the bike later.  Ah, Now to the run which I always dreaded since I couldn't run 1/4 mile without dying.  The secret if you promise not to tell is:  JUST MOVE FOR NOW!!!  Walk 4 and jog 1 or whatever mix keeps your breathing totaly under control.  Use this time to work on your breathing....Deep breaths with FULL exhales.  You will get there Stevey I promise (if you keep trying) and if you have questions please ask.

Complete change of topic here.

Me has  couple of questions

li'm going to start hitting the pool maybe once a week or so starting the week after next, and i'm wondering what i should be working on.

What stroke is best for triathalon? Crawl or backstroke or the fly? Although back in my school days i used to race with breast stroke and could outpace quite a few people doing freestyle lol

Freestyle is usually best as it is the most efficient in terms of energy expended and most of the power comes from your arms, which (hopefully) leaves your legs fresher for the bike and the run.  That said -  whatever way is the most comfortable for you is fine.  Just a comment on breast stroke - if you choose that option - please swim to the outside as it's no fun getting kicked by a breast stroker.

Hadn't thought about it that way, makes a good bit of sense !

I was at 147.2 yesterday - which is up 1.2 for me and almost back to the 147.8 that I started with. Family is in town, workouts are not what they are used to, eating is not the best. Hoping it was just the big late night dinner on Tuesday night but we will see next wed.

Doubtful I will make the 144 goal this month. Blah.

Saling is right.  I started out triathlons on a hybrid and then after a couple years got a road bike, but not a tri bike.  I have a life to live that actually does go beyond triathlons.  It doesn't matter which bike I use, I get passed by really heavy people riding mountain bikes up hill.  (I quit being judgmental about what people look like a long time ago.)  Just get out there and ride the bike you have.

Running?  Well, I started out running with a thirty second run and two minute walk and yes, I called that running.  I am now at three minute run with a one minute walk and expect to end the year at maybe a five or six minute run and a one minute walk.  The younger and more fit you are, the faster you will "graduate" from each level.  But if you don't start doing something, you won't be able to do anything.

Swimming.  Yes, freestyle is more efficient and all of that.  When or if I get fatigued, I have been known to do the sidestroke for a minute or two - anything to keep going while "resting."  You can also do a bit of backstroke, but you can't do too much backstroke as it isn't as fast and it is tough to do sighting on your back.  I have added distance to many a swim portion by going astray.  Unless you are one heck of a breaststroker, I can't imagine that stroke would be helpful during the swim.

I find doing triathlons to be a blast and have a tremendous sense of accomplishment when I am done and I am very much BOP.  Just go out there and have fun.

Great news... Grades are in, and though I didn't get my 4.0, I'm happy with the straight B's. It could've been a lot worse! Also, I graduated with one of my degrees. And now I get a second degree with just one more class. Secondly, the scale has been really kind to me lately. This morning was at 187.6, so still sub-190, despite my little binge last night. Had two helpings of spaghetti, 2 slices of lasagna, a piece of garlic toast, a bowl of Navy Bean soup, a bunch of protein water and I was still hungry when I went to bed. Now all I have to do is get back to the gym!

Well done on your results - CONGRATS!!! So, any ideas what to do next?

Yeah, sleep in to 3 pm, at least for the next 5-6 days. Then it's on to degree #2, which I'll get in the next 12-13 wks.

First is: Liberal Arts and Sciences. Associate of Arts
Second is: Liberal Arts and Sciences. Associate of Arts w/Psychology Emphasis

Basically, I take one more class (this coming qtr), and they send me a second degree. So why not, right?

That sleeping long sounds like a FANTASTIC plan! And very good decision on the second degree. So what exactly is Associate of Arts? Is is like our BA or MA?

I have no idea what your BA or MA 's are... The Associates degree's are 2 yr degrees in some of the most basic classes (200 level). And the dept. "Liberal Arts and Science" houses the Psychology dept, so... But once I transfer back to WSU this fall, I only have 3 qtrs left for my BS (Bachelor's of Science) then it's on to graduate school. So, with in 2-3 years, I'll have 4 degrees.

Jump in whenever you want... This is an ongoing forum, for what the past 2 1/2 yrs saling? It's nice to have you here. We make weekly weigh-in's, and set monthly goals. The weigh-in's are typically on weds, but it's really up to the individual. Weds just happen to be a ritual. Any questions, just ask. And feel free to jump in the conversations, if you feel like you have something to add. We're not snobby, and welcoming everybody!

Saling-- Weds was at 185.4, but this morning came in at 186, either one is ok for the record.

I guess it only matters if I want to have lost 2.7 lbs, or 3.3 lbs. vs. last wks total (188.7 lbs). I think either one is an accomplishment!

Ok I'm offcially starting to pray for this month to be over even thoug April means that my first race this season within days and so is my birthday. Why you may ask? Because I have a possible muscle tear but hopefully not a clot. I'm sorry but this is just too much for me in 30 days - first my back injury, then I was sick (incl. a vomitting bug) and now this!

I my calf was sore for a few days but went for a massage and it helped for a while. Last night though it got very sore and my foot was getting kinda numb so I went to A&E (accidents and emergency) to a hospital just round the corner. First I saw the sign saying 3-4hrs wait but that turned out to be from earlier during the day - thought I was lucky. I actually saw a doctor within about 20mins (and that does not happen too often in hospitals unless it is an EMERGENCY). So told your man what was bothering me and he says to me: It's an A&E in a hospital not an after hours GP (family doctor). I was shocked! After 10mins he said it looks like a muscle tear and gave me prescription for anti-inflammatory meds. I got home and just burst into tears - I don't deal too well with situations when people are like that to me without a reason. Also I'm fed up with something being constantly wrong with me. People say bad things come in 3s so I hope I'm done for now.

it never rains but it pours, you have had such an awful time of it lately but only a few days to go.  you just seem to be a magnet for all the narky health professionals out there and I'm really impressed you made it home before bursting in to tears :-)  I can identify with how you're feeling having had one injury after another but it DOES END.  I think it being the end of a long cold winter makes it worse, everyone suffering a bit of SAD, put on a bit of winter weight and reserves both physiologically and psychologically are depleted.  Take a deep breath, THIS WILL PASS AND YOU WILL GET BETTER.  Spring has sprung and the warmer weather should see you healed, fitter and raring to go.  The beauty of triathlon is that every injury can be seen as an opportunity to improve in one of the other disciplines which you haven't worked at before because you haven't had time.  Sending you huge cyber hugs.  The Munchkin has just asked me what I'm doing and he's sending you hugs too.

I think the only reason why I didn't start crying on my way how was because I was in the state of a complete shock. Thank you for the cyber hugs - really need them now - send them right back at you and Munchkin

I was actually thinking that this morning - having a few pints in a pub with people who are not doctors or physios and have a clean record of friendliness BUT no can do because of the anit-inflammatory meds. Normally I can sit in a pub and drink water no bother but it'd would be a sheer torture today. Might have to resort to some other comforting strategies....

I can see his point, but it wasn't a particularly tactful way of making it.

Short rant...so I have been dilligently training for months now, been seeing some progress etc, feeling good about all the hard work I am doing...welll then it happened...

I went mountain biking for the first time this season a few nights ago and IT KICKED MY ARSE!!!!! What the heck. Why is it, I can swim, bike and run for hours and hours and hours. But then I get on a mountain bike and the arse kicking commences. For the first time in months I felt so out of shape..well technically I am out of mountain biking shape but gosh darn it..I didnt think it would be that bad...oh my, so much more work to do.

The positive spin on this (thank goodness for encouraging/positive boyfriends) is that he said that in comparison to my first ride of the year last year, this first ride of the year was much improved. He said I did really well and he can see how the triathlon training has helped with my cardio which will help with mountain bike riding. But to get better at moutain biking, I need to mountain bike :-)

So, if you are in a routine and you are sure that you are doing all you can to improve, do something out of the ordinary and test yourself to see if you REALLY ARE doing everything you can to improve. You might be in for a suprise :-)

Oh and also, goes to show that specificty pays...to get better at a specific discipline, you have to train in THAT specific discipline.

it gets worse for me now. i've just got back to my uni home, and they have completely turned off the heating and the hot water. thus i can't have a shower, my room is only 10.5 degrees and the clothes i left on the radiator before i went ot parents house are still wet after 4 days -_-

The reason? Apparently our gas bill came to 200 quid (300-350 dollar/euro) over the 3 months of winter. . . (50 quid each ...
