I do love the ones at my gym which retail for $7500. I can't say I'm as enamoured by the $800 one in my garage.

I used to only run on the treadmill.  Then I discovered how much fun it was to run outside.  I will run on a treadmill if the weather is horrible or if I am recovering from an illness and need environmental control.  I do like the fact that you can play with elevations and speed on one but I never run well on the treadmill.

Not sure I'd say I love the treadmill, but I just put in another 2 hours on one that didn't drive me completely crazy.

Wednesday it as 68 degress in KC. I didn't realize it was going to be that nice so I didn't pack my normal outdoor stuff  - 305, sunglasses, hat. I just went out and ran. That I loved.

Hate it.  So, on days like yesterday (freezing rain, gale force winds), I run on an indoor track.  If I didn't have access to that, I'd seriously consider running in place before hopping on a treadmill.  Smile  I've done it a few times, though.  Only confirmed that yes, I hate it.

Which is just fine!  Raced a half marathon this morning in shorts and Under Armour cold gear top in the 30 range ..... with wind.

(Oh, and welcome to BT!)

One thing that I have not seen mentioned yet is that the treadmill allows me to run when I have the kids and my wife is at work. Given a choice, I would rather be outside. But if it is cold/rainy/snowy...I just hit the treadmill. I did 8 miles this morning on it while the kids played with their toys in the basement. That is starting to push the upper end of my boredom level though...

The TV in front of it really helps.

And I am like the OP, I rarely go more that 5 miles without adjusting my speed or something. I like to speed up, recover, speed up, normal pace, recover...try to keep it changing.

Used to run on a treadmill all the time and it did not bother me at all. 2 years ago changed that when spending all winter on one, plus cross country skiing and then changing to outdoors I ended up with a nice stress fracture of the sacrum. Doctor said treadmill was easy on the frame as was skiing and when going back to running on blacktop and concrete it was to much. I did not give myself the time needed to make the adaptations to a harder surface. So now I avoid it at all costs. Just use one when I absolutely have to.

Like a few others, I can't say I love it or hate it.  It does have its benefits, like...

I can still get in a run at a convenient or desirable time if my wife is gone and I have to watch the kids

It's pitch dark outside

It's snowing...like today

I want to accomplish a specific training goal without having to deal with the incessant hills in my neighborhood

That being said, it is much more rewarding to run outside to me.  When I get back, I feel motivated about the distance I ran more than I do on the treadmill.  Nevertheless, in the winter, there is no question I can get in more miles with the treadmill than without, even though I haven't really been wearing it out this winter!  I don't find it boring if I watch TV while doing it.  I have a set of wireless headphones I can use while I am running and if my kids are watching a show with me, I get half credit for spending time with the family so I can take my long bike rides without guilt later in the week.

Definitely hate it, refuse to use one actually.  Every time I try to use one I always end up kicking the front of it and making loud noises, and then I spend the whole rest of the time trying so hard not to trip up and go flying off the back.  I can handle the drainer a lot more than the dreadmill, but d*amn dude 20 miles?  I am inspired by the mental strength it must have taken to do that lol, good job!

Neccesary evil, but I avoid it when I can.  In the cold I still run outside, but ice is a different animal.

The more that I run (3 years now), the less I like it. We have an olympic speed skating facility here in town, so when the weather or trail/road conditions don't allow outside runs, I go there to run ou the track outside of the ice track. The treadmill seems to have negative effects on my already poor stride as well. I by far prefer running outside. I have become much more tolerant of weather, where it used to have to be 70 degrees and sunny to run (I live in Wisconsin)now I quite enjoy when it is 20 degrees outside. It's nice and crisp, and you don't get hot. I have gone in very light drizzle, which wasn't terribly exciting, but it was also 50 degrees out. 70 and a little rain wouldn't be so bad. I cant even imagine 20 miles. I did 9 once, and that was only remotely tolerable because I had a decent movie on.

I just ran 20.5 Miles on the treadmill.

Holy long runs on a treadmill Batman!  That takes mental toughness to a whole new level, IMHO!  I would go nucking futs.  10K max for me... I use the treadmill as a last resort...if the weather is just too unmanagable outside.

I double dog dare you to run a marathon on that bad boy.  Good luck with that and I am glad it works for ya.  I'll be outside running...

Hate the dreadmill so much that I did my 10 miler yesterday in the pouring rain which turned to sleet/hail half way through with temps in the 30s and wind chill who knows how low.  Not saying it wasn't miserable but it was way better than the treadmill!  Plus, how many treadmills are there at races?  NONE

i had this same convo with myself a month or so ago.

There are a few things, IMO, ive noticed....

1. I run faster minute miles outside, i can set the treadmill to equate my outside average but i find its harder to maintain on the treadmill.

2. i live in FL, running outside is SOOOO much more rewarding/interesting

3. I feel less aches etc.. when i run outside and feel them more on the treadmill

4. I love being able to run places, rather than run in one spot.

5. Treadmill will be acceptable for training crunches timewise or good solid speed sessions

But in the end, I LOVE running outside and will always opt for it.

I like it because I can control everything that happens.  I can set my pace or change it easily if needed, which makes improvements easy to gauge and positive feedback like that is always good.  It's also a lot easier to talk myself into going to the cardio cinema at the gym and watching a movie than it is to talk myself into bundling up and running in 30 degree weather, or rain, or snow, or ice, or all of the above.

I don't like it but I use it when it is 30 and raining like hell. Yesterday I did two separate 1 hour sessions ending up running 12+ miles total.
The problem was I was running in a very crowded and warm(~70) environment in the Y and it wiped me out.

I hate the dreadmill, but if it's too dark to run outside then I'll hop on it .  music or audiobook or tv.

I never ran on a treadmill until this year.  I only started running on it because I have an early season race and I totally HATE cold weather.  I needed to get runs in, and it was way to cold for me outside.   I actually found that I liked it ... I could get the news early in the early am while I ran and be set for the day.   I do prefer running outside, but I sure do like the treadmill rather than being cold.

I used to hate the treadmill but I've made peace with it this year. It turns out that I have some sort of weird skin thing when if it gets really cold, I come back with the HUGE itchy red welts all over my body that end up bloating and driving me nuts. I'll push it until the windchill is in the negative digits...and then I'll do the treadmill. About an hour is all I can take. If I'm lifting at the gym, I might hop on and crank out a 30 minute warm up.

I haven't been on the treadmill for years. The only time I get on it is to waste time while I wait for the spin class to start and when I do that I walk.

I'd much rather run outside with tornadoes, lightening, blizzard...etc. than run on the treadmill.

Treadmills have their uses.  When it's too bad outside, I can do 45' or so on the tm.  Otherwise, nope.  I never understood why when it's nice weather out, people are still in the gym running.
