You're not alone.

The treadmill is one of the best get-faster tools out there. You know that computrainer guarantee that you'll go 2mph faster? Treadmills ought to have the same guarantee, because they're basically a computrainer/ergometer for the run.

The vast majority of my running is done on a treadmill, year round.

Personally, I hate it; however, I am not above using it when needed. I had a 15 mile run on tap for Sunday, and it was raining/sleeting/snowing all day. No way was I going to call it, so off to the gym to hammer it out.

Like others, I fine that I carry a faster pace outside, but I think it is much more difficult to hold a little bit slower pace on the dreadmill.

It can go either way depending on the day...it is a tool.  I rather use it than not get a run in.

The worst is going to the gym and having to restart the treadmill after it automatically shuts off after an hour.  I've had to do it twice in one run before!

Yeah, I hate 'em too.

crkhobbit - 2009-03-02 3:41 PM I like it because I can control everything that happens.  I can set my pace or change it easily if needed, which makes improvements easy to gauge and positive feedback like that is always good.  It's also a lot easier to talk myself into going to the cardio cinema at the gym and watching a movie than it is to talk myself into bundling up and running in 30 degree weather, or rain, or snow, or ice, or all of the above.

This is exactly why I DON'T run on the treadmill, because I can't control MANY THINGS in a race. I want the training experience of running in crazy winds, 100-degree temps, 0-degree wind chills, and everything inbetween so I can see how my body reacts in those specific conditions. For example the marathon I did on Saturday in Texas - the starting temp was about 35 degrees (it had been 80 degrees just days before). I heard LOTS of complaining about how cold it was and feet/hands going numb, etc. I was really thankful I'd gotten out and trained in the cold and wind all winter during my training... the 35-degrees + 20mph winds were old hat to me by race day, and I knew exactly what to expect from myself in those conditions.

Hate it. I would rather run in a blizzard or a downpour (which I have been known to do- just ask my family).
