I live in NJ, this is my first season of OWS and just ordered a Xterra wetsuit.

For the early season swims, say water temp in the 50's.. what else do people wear for the swim?  Hood? Gloves? booties if that's even possible?

Low 50's I wear booties and a neoprene skull cap, not a full hood. I'd wear gloves if I own them.

As it warms up I'll shed the booties first, then the skull cap.

when we surfed the cold NJ water we'd wear a 7mil, booties and a hood, but that would be a helluvalot to splash around in, especially when it's still rough this time of year.  I think you gotta go with a hood at least.  Anyplace calm you can swim?  Like the Shark River Inlet or on the bay side of any of the islands?

Good luck!!  I live in NJ and am a certified WWW (Warm Water Wussy).  I wear a YMCA when the water temp outside is 50 (or below 70 for that matter).

I guess I haven't lived here long enough.  I lost all respect for the mystique of The Hamptons, when I was invited out to visit during 4th of July weekend, stepped into the water and heard "foomp!"  The "foomp" sound I heard was "the boys" inverting themselves to try and find warmth.  You'd think a beach in July would be a typical place to find nice relaxing warmish water.  Not in NY/NJ.    However, shallow lakes are a bit warmer.  The NJ State Tri lake last year was practically a bathtub in late July.

As was mentioned already, a neoprene cap to keep the noggin warm.

I try to wait until the water is alteast 55 degrees  before diving in.

2 swimcaps and wetsuit.  There are some old guys that swim in speedos in those temps.

I swim in San Francisco bay year round, temps around 48-50 in winter. I use a wetsuit, earplugs, a 'hothead' by Barracuda and a bright swim cap over. No booties, no gloves, sometimes no wet suit.

I just ease in and let the water numb my feet, then hands. I start my swim with my face out of water since putting my face in the water to get numb is the hardest part. But within .25 mile my face is in as well.

It does take time for your body to get used to the idea of cold OWS, both physically and mentally. Start short and add time as your body adjusts.

Have something hot to drink on shore, and get warm ASAP after getting out of the water.

We did an early June swim in the Aurora Reservoir last year, when the water temp was around 57 or 58 degrees. I wore a full wetsuit and 2 swimcaps - one insulated.
I was cold for the first few 100 meters, especially my face (SO hard to put your face in water that cold), but then I got numb and it was okay.
Yes on the warm drink on shore -soup or cocoa or something. And a blanket.

You're nuts.  I've been going in 48 degree water, but there's no way I'd do it without booties, socks under my booties, and scuba gloves.  And it still hurts.

Can't go by what San Francisco swimmers say.  There's a reason hard core SF swimmers refer to the divisions in Alcatraz swims as "Naked" and "WuSsies" (wetsuits)

Booties and hood really help me when it is in the 50's. Also swimming the day before the race and getting in before the start otherwise cold water takes your breath away and makes you feel pretty crappy and not in the ideal position to race.

We swim in Santa Cruz when the water is in the low-mid 50s - just a wetsuit is all we need. I swam in Florida at a tri camp last month - everyone was complaining the water was so cold at 57 degrees. I thought it felt GREAT (and warm) compared to our usual wharf swims.

I'm in a similar situation to the OP, and a quick search for neoprene swim caps brings up some different models, all with a chin strap feature.  Is that what you use, or is there a brand you can recommend?  Thanks!

I have gone in at temps greater than 50 with only my wetsuit . I wear double caps and ear plugs. Without the ear plugs I get dizzy and cant do it! I also have put vaseline on my face but I take care not to get it on my wet suit.

Good luck!!!

Last year only my skinsuit...after being cold for the remaining 5 months I have considered a wetsuit of some sort this season

Yeah, mine has a chin strap. I think it is made by Pinnacle. I bought whatever the local dive shop had.

I also wear ear plugs but since I wear them regardless of water temp, I have no idea if it makes a difference with cold water.

LoL I plan on having all the neoprene for Mooseman in June, predicted water temp is low 60's.  First of all not a big fan of the swim portion and even less of a fan of cold water.

Same as most others on here, If still in the low 50s (53 right now), I will wear earplugs and a neoprene cap. I whimped out even more and bought some booties and gloves and will try those out this week. My suit is pretty short on the sleeves and legs so my ankles go numb after a few minutes.

I have to warm up a lot when swimming in cold water, it makes it harder to exhale properly. I miss Florida (sometimes).
