I always seem to come across nutrition articles stating that for proper weight management and healthy eating, fruits and veggies should be a consistent staple of your diet.

My question is this: I know the really good veggies that we should eat often (Broccoli, Spinach, Bananas, Apples) but what fresh fruits/veggies are overrated, worthless, or nutritionally lacking? As of the moment, the ones that come to my mind are iceberg lettuces (basically eating paper) and corn (overrated).

I really like Turnip Greens, I guess its an acquired taste. I seem to remember that when eating green beans that are boiled with only water(no butter) it acutally takes more calories to digest than you gain from them. I guess they are really high in fiber or something.

A good general rule of thumb is "the darker the color, the better it is for you nutritionally." A lot of the lighter colored veggies have a higher percentage of water. Spinach is better than lettuce.

Iceberg lettuce, indeed, and I think celery is pretty useless as well. Maybe that's just because I don't like it.

Just 'cause you don't like something, doesn't mean it's "useless." This site:

http://www.whfoods.com/foodstoc.php

lists celery as one of the "World's Healthiest Foods."

Celery contains vitamin C and several other active compounds that promote health, including phalides, which may help lower cholesterol, and coumarins, that may be useful in cancer prevention.

Eat more Garlic!!!

Garlic History:

Garlic was not only bestowed with sacred qualities and placed in the tomb of Pharaohs, but it was given to the slaves that built the Pyramids to enhance their endurance and strength. This strength-enhancing quality was also honored by the ancient Greeks and Romans, civilizations in which athletes ate garlic before sporting events, and soldiers consumed it before going off to war.

Yes bear, I'm aware of that, hence the smiley at the end.

Thanks for the link. Now I know it has more nutritional value than I thought.

Dr Bob Arnot's Revolutionary Weight Control book has a list put out by CPSI that list fruits and vegetables by their nutritional value.

But basically, any and all are good for you in moderation. The thinking used to be that the darker vegetables are better, but then studies have shown that onions and garlic are very good for you as well.

I imagine the kind you like will be eaten more often. I'll see if I can get that list online somewhere and list it here.

THey all contain water & fiber to some degree regardless of other nutritional content. THis makes them all better than that cookie on your neighbor's desk.

I suppose cocoa butter could be considered a type of vegetable oil, right?
