Good lord!  All the gadgets.  I got into training for my 1st Tri because a friend said he was doing one, not sure if he still is, but I had no idea the expenses to be had.  Not that you need everything available to be successful, but I can see how people get so excited about the 'red' bike or whatever next investment they make to be better at this sport.

This is what I owned at the end of December:

3 pair swim trunks

1 stationary bike

2 pair running shoes (never used for it's intended use)

What I own now in addition to the other stuff:

1 PolarA5 watch

1 pair Tri short

1 pair biker shorts

1 pair of cycling shoes (hope to use this weekend for the first time)

1 pair of pedals to fit said cycling shoes

1 LA Fitness membership

1 Total Immersion book

1 Chi Running book

2 pair swim goggles

2 borrowed mountain bikes

I look forward to Polar625x, endless pools, Lemond Spinner dillio, my own Tri bike, a wet suit, a better body.

You are all an inspiration.  Have great weekend.

I will be appearing in Carrolton, GA April 30 as a bootleg triathlete.

Best of luck to you in your upcoing race.  I agree this sport is not cheap or easy- but, it sure is a whole lotta fun!

Everyone would be doing it except people like us.

I tend to do things just because they're NOT easy so if triathlons were easy, everyone wouldn't be doing them because I know for sure I wouldn't be doing them.

Look at everything triathletes have to train.

Now, look at how much is necessary.

Triathlon is expensive ... if you make it that way.

Amazing that so many great runners come from Kenya and so many great baseball players come from the Dominican. Shouldn't it be impossible to be that good without the gadgets? =)

Triathlon certainly is not unique in the aspect that people will buy almost any and all marginally useful products if the promise of increased performance is promised.

Truth be told ... all you will need is a water source, a bike, and some shoes. Specific clothing, etc is OPTIONAL. I bet I run just as fast (more like just as slow) in a pair of basketball shorts and muscle shirt as I would in a specially-designed, one-of-a-kind trisuit.

Certainly, I would like a new bike ... but I am not spending thousands of dollars for something for which "I" am the "engine".
