I'm going for my first triathlon.

June 26th

Ozark Valley Triathlon www.ozarkvalleytriathlon.com

1000 yd. swim
19 mile bike
4 mile run

I am in decent shape now, not super, I need to see where I am in regards to swimming, I am a good swimmer, but I've never swam in a this big of a group or for a time. I'm pretty sure I never swam 1000 yards while I was in the Marines.

What are your recommendations for a training plan? I don't have any delusions of winning this race, but placing in my age group would be great. Finishing would be even better

Check out the plans on the main page: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=376  Be honest, but it sounds like you could probably get into the Beginnger Sprint, or even the Beginner Olympic distance plan.  The latter might be better, as your first tri seems to be a long sprint (swim/run wise...)

Strong suggestion #1 - Get a swimming coach....

Swimming efficiently is about form and technique. Not having established bad habits is a good place to start. Getting a coach to establish good swim form and technique will go a long ways to providing confidence during the swim.

BTW, the triathlon you have chosen is half way between a sprint distance and oly distance race with an emphasis on the swim... this will mean being efficient swimmer will com in handy for this particular triathlon.
