Subject: One question for the guys, and one for the ladies

Ok so as a few of you may know (from the Georgia forum), I lost an expensive pair of tri shorts at LA Fitness a few weeks ago.  I learned my lesson that I should not be swimming in my tri shorts on a regular basis.  So I finally went to Sports Authority this afternoon to get some swim gear.  Long story short, I ended up getting a pair of TYR speedo type shorts, the underwear looking ones.  I, personally, NEVER thought I would wear these kind of shorts in my life.  But I tried them on and actually liked them.  So my question for the guys is, how many of you train in these types of shorts?  Lets just call them speedos with a lowercase 's'.  And for the ladies, what do you think of guys that wear them?  Is it acceptable, sexy, or do you think "who is this clown?"  Obviously depends on the guy, but in general okay.

Thanks!

So my question for the guys is, how many of you train in these types of shorts?

I think you're the only one.

Well, as a competitive swimmer in high school, I thought nothing of it.  But if a guy showed up at my pool today in one.....hmmm I dunno!  Depends.  If he's got a good body then I'm all for it....if he's got a spare tire and is over the age of 60, then it's a biiiiiig problem.

I guess I wouldn't assume you're a tool, maybe just a former competitive swimmer that's used to it. *shrugs*

"Underwear looking ones"?

My kids would laugh me out of the house if you're talking about a banana hammock!

I have one of each.  Jammers for indoor and early am workouts.  Speedos for when there is sun!

There is a guy who wears the speedo at my pool. I call him swimmer dude because he is fast as hell. I have never had one thought go through my head about his suit. I just wish I could keep up.

So I'm a bit unclear - so instead of jammers, you bought a speedo, ie, brief-style bathing suit? Not too many guys wear speedos, but they're not uncommon. Most guys just prefer the jammers (longer-style). They're acceptable, in my book, if you have a decent enough body and you are at swim practice (ie, don't wear it to the beach or to "go to the pool" in the summer). But I also grew up watching/following competitive swimming, so I don't really care either way.

As long as you don't have a beer belly flaunt it baby!

And by all mean necessary... DON'T EVER EVER WEAR SPEEDO'S TO THE BEACH.... EVER !!

A few of the guys that swim regularly at the pool with me wear them. They are all different ages, body types, etc. I don't really worry about it. I have my own workout and attire to concern myself with.

I'll wear a speedo sometimes, or drag suits.. which aren't much longer.

Sure.  I think that it's absolutely acceptable for guys who are swimming to wear speedos.  Body type or speed is entirely irrelevant.  They're meant to be used when one is swimming, go for it!  Get out there and be proud of your new skimpy swim gear!

I've been swimming in a Masters group for over a year (LTF in Alpharetta, your hometown).  All triathletes.  Not a single sole wears speedo undies.  In fact, only guy that I have ever seen at the gym that wears them is about 60 years old and the color is pinkish/purple.

Woman's perspective?  Lose the speedo and buy some cheap tri shorts if you're worried about losing them again!

I'll stick to jammers myself.  If I see you in the brief style speedos and you seem in relatively in shape, I'm gonna assume you are a fish.

wear what you want!  forget what everyone else thinks.  but yeah, like everyone else said, it would be a plus if you have a nice body.

Just please tell me you're not like the dude i COULD NOT see because i didn't have corrective lenses while i was in the pool that time. My roommate swears he was wearing a flesh-colored Speedo... All i know was that he was a blurry blob of body. i almost drowned i was laughing so hard.

TheSchwamm - 2009-03-20 8:39 PM  flesh-colored Speedo...

I am SO intrigued by this!

I think the general theme in "attire" questions is do what you're comfortable with. As athletes spending the majority of our training and racing hours in some form of spandex, we pretty much loose that "what do others think" mentality.

That being said, I don't see too many speedos at my pool. But if I did, I wouldn't think twice about it. I might *look* twice (ahem) if dude had a nice body. but not think twice about why he was wearing it.

There was a old guy who use to wear flesh colored speedo that was 4 sizes too small and have his crack hang out while we swam.

It was pretty awesome. I couldn't help think to my self, I hope that's me in the future.

Every time I see a man in speedos I think "Man.. he's got guts." If it works for you, go for it... I would just feel like ben stiller in meet the parents.

Just to respond to some of the comments...

 1) I would never consider wearing them to the beach.  I grew up on the beach and know better.

2) They are not flesh colored.  They are black with blue strips on the hips.

3) I'm not gonna come straight out and say I have a nice body, but, I'm 25, I exercise a lot, and I've played sports my whole life, so we'll leave it at that and let others be the judge when I post some pictures.   Needless to say I'm not the old dude with a spare tire.

4) I may not be the fastest guy in the pool, but I *think* I'm fast enough to wear these! Haha.
