How windy is too windy to ride?

Here in Katy TX where the land is flat as a pancake, the wind is the closest thing I have to hill training outside of  parking garages (which I've done a few times).  The only problem I have is when the gusts are 15+ mph higher than the steady wind.  The intense, sudden, and uncontrollable cross-wind can push one over no matter what position you're in. 

A steady 30 mph wind is much easier to deal with than a gusting, swirling, 30 mph wind. 

We were out last Tuesday for the first group ride of the season.  We had a pretty brisk 20-30 mph wind.  Great for the tailwind portion, really sucky as a headwind.  The real pucker came when it was a cross wind.  I was riding in a pack with guys leaning 10-15 degrees to the left just to stay upright.  I was willing to sacrifice a little (OK, a lot) of efficiency for safety and not be too close to anyone. 

I hear you on the breeze. I live pretty close to the coast and the wind off of the water likes to play with you. Today was pretty horrible. Lots of wind from the side and on the nose. Made for slow speeds and a few wobbly moments.

I have yet to scrap a ride because of the wind. I have been caught with steadily increasing headwinds that made an out and back ride one of the quickest return trips ever. 25 to 30 mph from behind with wicked HOT temps. FUN!!

For me, the rules are simple:

Winds <15mph:   bike
Wind 15-35mph:  catamaran sailing
Wind 30-45mph:  windsurfing
Wind >45mph:     sit on the porch and drink beer

My second tri ever was in this kind of wind on an out and back course.  You could barely go 14 mph down a hill in it - but on the way back I averaged over 25 the entire way.  It was brutal.  Of course, right about the time I finished the bike leg, the wind slowed down and the sun came out.  I could have used the tail wind on the run. 

I love Iowa in the spring.

I hate the winds in my bike rides...but...I don't have choices...here...where I live is permanently windy...and...I really have learned to deal with the winds....

I think from 20 mph + is too much...

Right now...the winds are coming from E at 20 mph gusting to 30 mph...and...I was running...and...it was hard to run against the winds but was an excellent work-out...and...when I was running with the winds pushing me...I believed would make me fall face down...LOL

I think it's too windy to ride when you are concerned about your safety.  (depends on road conditions, traffic, time of day, who you're riding with, and your personal skill and confidence)  I could well be different on different days.

We only "bagged" one ride.  It was gusting over 40, so instead of hitting the open highway, we took a more lesurely ride through some neighboorhoods.  the houses mostly blocked the wind, and because we were sheltered and riding slower everyone felt fairly safe. 

The guys who hit the highway confirmed that it was just flat scarey out there.

That happened to me a few weeks ago. We were having 30MPH gusts. I was almost blown into traffic a couple times. At one point I rounded a curve and started down a hill between a elevated highway and a river. It was like a wind tunnel I came to an almost complete stop. Downhill. No fun.
