Sensei Sin City | Subject: Why do I hate to swim now? Ok, Ok. Hate is a little strong... But I REALLY used to look forward to jumping in the pool and cranking out the laps. On the flip side, even looking at the bike made me shudder. Couldn't stand it. Now all I want to do is ride, or get outside and run. Road, MTN, spin class, it's all good. But to think about getting wet? No thanks... Does anyone else go through phases like this?
BTW, thank the gods I'm GOOD at swimming. I can afford to do less. Conversly, I suck at the bike. I could use more time there. Edited by Aikidoman 2009-03-24 6:48 PM |

Extreme Veteran 495 Denton | Subject: RE: Why do I hate to swim now? My love for swimming has definitely decreased since I've gotten more serious about racing. I think it's just the monotony of staring at the pool floor, swimming back and forth and back and forth... Really, it's like hating to use a bike trainer - only with swimming, you basically have no choice. Give me the great outdoors any day. |

Champion 26509 Sydney | Subject: RE: Why do I hate to swim now? If you have the option of changing your swimming location try that - a new pool, outdoor vs indoor pool etc it might help? I go through patches of not really looking forward to swimming and thats my strength (if I have one). For me its the hassle of being wet again, having to sort out the hair etc... Ridiculous I know!!! I think its just natural if you are doing a lot of something.. |

Extreme Veteran 446 Auckland, New Zealand | Subject: RE: Why do I hate to swim now? Yup - went through exactly the same thing this past summer (southern hemisphere). I swam 4x a week for most of the winter, then as spring/summer came I just didn't want to swim. I'm also a resonable swimmer, so can get away with it. However this coming year I've told myself that I have to keep swimming 4x a week all the way through!! |

I can't wait for the lake to get warm enough so I can start doing OWS with my training buddy. We usually do 1 or 2 a week and add in once a week in the pool and I'm good. |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: Why do I hate to swim now? I get into swim funks every so often. I'll take time off swimming sometimes just because I need a mental break. After my IM, I tried swimming for about 4-6 weeks then I just decided I needed a break so no swimming for 2.5 months. When I started back I went to a new pool that is clean, smells better, has better lighting, big windows that sun shines in, has a hot tub and I like it much much better. I do 90% of my swimming there and it is as if I left my bad swimming attitude and swim funk at my old pool. Thankfully so far my swimming hasn't fallen into a funk this off season. Me I like you I love to ride any bike, any time, anywhere and that gives me much great joy than getting wet. This off season I am doing what I should working on my weaknesses swim/run and letting my stronger sport maintain. |

I quit competitive swimming (Walked away from a scholarship) because I couldn't stand the smell of chlorine one day. (Understanding coach, I was able to switch to x-country). To this day it's still a bit of a mental tussle to get into the pool That reminds me, I need to get a waterproof case for my shuffle, see if that helps. John |

Veteran 393 The Beautiful San Fernando Valley in Sunny L.A. | Subject: RE: Why do I hate to swim now? You hate swimming now because: It's windy out and you don't like the chill from the shower to the pool. You don't really like swimming more than 200 yards at a time. You just caught a whiff of chlorine and it's bringing back bad memories. That crazy guy is in the pool again. You're tired of dry skin. It's winter and sane people don't walk outside in the rain while wearing just their underwear. You'd rather be cycling. |

I'm not a swimmer...but after spending three days a week in the pool I've actually come to enjoy swimming...I still kind of dread a little bit before the swim...and yeah I don't really like being wet...but once I'm in the pool I'm so glad to be there and I enjoy it....I used to hate swimming so its a big step for me. |

Sometimes you just enjoy one more above the others or dislike one more than others cuz you are in a plateau or whatever. Take it as an opportunity to work more on the bike and just get the swim done. It will come around...Ok, Ok. Hate is a little strong... But I REALLY used to look forward to jumping in the pool and cranking out the laps. Extreme Veteran 492 Cleveland, Ohio | Subject: RE: Why do I hate to swim now? Yeah I had a hard time getting back in the water after a four month hiatus from swimming. I think it's hard to start up anything again if you've been away from it. But I'm happy to say that just making myself DO it and sticking with it is working, and I feel in the groove again. I'm sure Jorge is right, you get in a funk in one discipline or another at some point. |

Extreme Veteran 737 | Subject: RE: Why do I hate to swim now? I used to get tired before I got bored. Now I get bored before I get tired. I can't decide which is worse. If I could get my mind to wander on command, I'd be set and the yards would just melt away, but then I'd lose count of my laps and have to wait for that kid's mother to move so I can read the lane clock and figure out how far I've gone. |

I am in the same boat...I used to love swimming, but now I just want to ride or run.....run preferably, which is weird for me as I am best at swimming and used to hate running. I think I go in cycles just as Jorge said. I have printed out different swim workouts though to try and mix it up for me so I don't get so bored. |

Now to actually be helpful: One thing I've done to get over a swimming funk is buy toys. I bought paddles and wanted to go use them every day. That was 2 mos ago and I'm still excited. Or go buy a new suit...maybe that only works cause I'm a girl. I try really hard to get myself IN the water, because if I can do that, then I usually won't quit a set....usually being the key word. Often times it's the whole routine of getting undressed and being absolutely freezing in the locker room that prevents me from swimming. |

I hate the pool, i hate the chlorine stench, i hate sharing lanes and pool space, i also hate swimming slow and being tired for the bike, which i love, so i do it. When the weather warms i will be in the Ocean, with pool swims maybe once a week. Hopefully i will not burn out, or get in a funk.
