Is there any way to track calories burned (or at least get a ball park number) while swimming? I suppose I could wear my HR strap in the pool, but is there any other way?

Dunno how accurate but it's a more consistant number than pulling one out of your butt

The ballpark is 640 calories per hour if you are swimming reasonably hard continuously for that hour.  That is a general number like that you burn 100 calories per mile running. You can use it for a broad estimate of calories burned.  Granted if the water is 45 F or if you are very fast, you will burn more.  Or you can use a fancy calculator thing.

I'd have to say no there isn't.  Other than using some personal HR and VO2 data to derivive your approx cal/yd value.

Swimming isn't like running where everyone burns close to the same calories per mile, proportional to weight, adjusted for course profile, with only a few percent variance due to running efficency.  In swimming it's all technique driven.  I can burn twice as many calories going half as far as a good swimmer.

My 640 was just a really braod stroke from a calorie calculator I use for fun to track all calories burned.  The catagory is vigorous swimming and it is not based on distance, but time.  I am sure the more specific ones are more accurate, but if one wants to just figure out really generically how many calories they burned in a continous 2 hour swim, 1300-1500 calories would be a generic guess without doing any sophisticated calculations.
