Hello Texans BTers,

I've been kicking the idea about moving out of Boston and one of the places I've always heard great things about is Austin Texas. I've been told you guys have a great tri community, great places for training; the city is pretty, good social life, etc. I love Boston because of the diversity, the small city full with all the amenities of big cities and the people (even when they are known as massholes ). Still I've been up here for over 10 years and I am fed up with the harsh winters!

For those of you leaving there, tell me why moving to Austin would be a good idea; tell me about tri training, social life, entertainment, the people, etc. Sell me your city! Thx

Not specific to Austin, but we have no state income tax here, and the cost of living is substantially lower than in Boston, so you'd be getting a two way raise essentially.

the answers will depend on your AG..

just cause it's texas doesnt' mean we don't get a good 2-3 day cold winter,, or have to bundle up when the temps sneak under 50

Yea... I would like to live in Austin too. Houston is too flat for my likes.

My training rides that were on the trainer.. maybe 8? Half of those are due to the wind being more than I feel safe with riding in traffic. Texas in general is as good as it gets for a triathlete as far as community goes and amount of races.

Derek - Those two alone are good enough reasons to do it! MA taxes you for everything and leaving in Boston well, it is rather pricey

Aaron - You are lucky!

Gaary - 50F cold? That's beach whether for us Bostonians!

Austin is a FANTASTIC city! It also has a diverse population due to the University of Texas. There are tons of great outdoor activities, but it does get HOT in the summer. The only other  downside of Austin other than the heat and humidity is the traffic, I would recommend living near downtown or around Lamar and 6th and then you can walk, run, ride, just about everywhere you need to go! There are 3 tri shops within about a quarter mile radius located on Lamar and Barton Springs Rd. !  And when you need to cool off and get your swim training in, Barton Springs is AWESOME!

Seriously, Austin is a great city.  It isn't huge like Houston and Dallas, though the traffic can be a monster; the downtown area continues to grow in culture and diversity as far as what one enjoys. I may not be the 6th Street type, but I sure enjoyed a nice Wine Bar on 2nd Street.  Everytime I'm down there I see someone biking or running, and inevitably someone is rowing crew or their own kayak in Lady Bird Lake.  You will find every type of personality, political opinion, race, and ethnicity.  It's a beautiful area, and while the cost of living is probably one of the higher spots in Texas it is WAY cheaper than New England!! If you are into the "green" movement--Austin is too.

Check out the www.austin.com site...it'll probably take you a long time, but it definitely captures the different aspects of Austin.

Austin really isn't Texas, which is a good thing.  Austinites are much more educated and healthy than the rest of us.  Richer too.  And more cultured.  And funnier (Keep Austin Weird, Lance's Juan Pelota coffee shop, etc.).

If it's like San Antonio and Houston, there's a large community of middle and upper class Mexican nationals (I'm not sure if that's a plus or a minus for you!).  They probably have real Mexican restaurants in Austin in addition to lots of Tex-Mex.  Spanish is spoken everywhere.

Austin housing prices are high by Texas standards, but probably very reasonable by Boston standards.  Pay in Texas is typically lower than Northeast standards.  No state income tax but high sales tax and high property tax (at least it feels high; I have no comparison).

We make day trips to Austin for good Japanese food, visit REI, and watch bats!

Austin is flat out a wonderful city.  I lived there the last 10 years and just recently moved to Houston only because of my job.  I couldn't pass up an opportunity within my company.  There is ton of endurance sport teams/groups.  Alot of pros call this there home, its the capital.  To the west you have endless miles going out into the hill country, to the east is flatter, but still has some nice rollers.  This is where Longhorn 70.3 is.  Weather is much nicer, cost of living is better.  With you being a coach there is an abundance of athletes in the area as well.  Luckily my mother and father in law live in Austin so we still visit at least 1 weekend a month, my bike, wetsuit, running shoes come along and I still get to enjoy the area.

Hey Jorge,
well, as you know, I'm a New Englander. BUT, moved to Austin 3 years ago. It's a FANTASTIC place to live. Great college town, so there's ton of culture. High Tech hub, AND State Government. It's very scenic, and people are friendly

Great weather. Coming from New England, there's no comparison. If there are clouds in the sky, I find it strange. It's an everyday occurrence in New England.

Great tri scene, with clubs, shops, etc. You can ride your bike outside year round.

Everyone else has chimed in about it, already, but as a fellow New Englander, I have a unique perspective.

Of course, NO ONE dislikes cold weather more than me. It's cool today....low 70's

I guess I have the best of both worlds....go back to NH for the summer, for our races. New England in the summer is tough to beat....all 8 days of it

If you're in the 40-44 AG, nothing to see here, keep moving along Laughing

SUnday morning I was running on the Town Lake Hike & Bike Trail.  It is in the middle of downtown.  It is very scenic.  Afterwards I swam in Barton Springs, a naturally spring fed swimming hole.  I couldn't help but think how lucky I am to call Austin home.

If you like live music, SXSW just ended.  I don't know how many hundreds of bands from around the world perform at SXSW.

And in 18 years of living here, I have never had to shovel any snow.

People are friendly
Always something to do
I don't have to warm up my car
I don't have to shovel snow
Very active

Down sides......
No RedSox.. although Little Wodrows has a nice Sox Nation population going.
Not as much culture as New England
People here talk funny.

Yup...Austin rocks.  I came out here for college 19 years ago and never plan on leaving!  It's a great casual town with all of the amenities of a big city  Lots of great bedroom communities in the outlying areas to choose from, and pretty cycling friendly.  Lots of great routes with or without hills, depending on your needs.  I mean, if Lance can live and train here, 'nuff said!  The tri community is big and seems to get bigger every year.  You would totally fit right in.

My favorite spots are Zilker Park and Barton Springs, the Domain, and Alamo Drafthouse.  But there's tons of others to choose from.  Come on down for a visit sometime and check us out! Hey...why don't you pick one of the awesome races down here and take some extra time to look around. I'll bet that a few of us BTers would be willing to give you the 10-cent tour!

Austin is amazing.

Tri shops galore! Bike shops galore! Barton Springs! Town Lake! 6th Street! ACL! SXSW!

Austin is definitely an island in the middle of Texas and IMO that's a good thing.

I've never been to Boston but I have a feeling you'd love Austin even if you just made the decision based solely on weather. (granted it did rain a bit today and dip into the 60's when I was out on my ride)

Forgot to mention the only downside....No Red Sox, Patriots, or Celtics.
BUT, I've got the MLB Extra Innings package, and the NFL Sunday Ticket. Get to see ALL of the Pats and Sox games. So, if you're into that, there's an easy solution.

So, I guess there is no downside to living here. The Pats are playing in Houston this coming year. I'll go to that game. AND, I won't have to wear a winter jacket, gloves, and boots. Don't have to worry about frostbite either.....

I to am also in this boat, although I'm only 3 hours up the road in Dallas. I have two job leads down in Austin as their tech scene is booming - and my wife gave me thumbs up to peruse them. If I do end up down there, I will miss the sports scene up here including all the Stars and Mavs games I typically go to. But... I do miss actual trees, something Frisco (Dallas) does not have!

I thought you were going to list a downside.

SUBMIT TO THE BURNT ORANGE, DOOOO IT.

To add to what everyone else said, Austin is awesome. The traffic is awful, but if you were in Boston during the Big Dig then you've seen traffic that's as bad or worse. If I could make as much money in Austin as I do in Dallas and I could get Karen to come with me, I'd move back in a heartbeat.

Very good stuff! It certainly makes Austin the main candidate from all what I heard. I love Boston very much; I like the fact that even with the harsh winter a good % of the population remains active. I live across the Charles River and you see people running, riding, walking, etc ALL day every day.

I definitely want better weather, but leaving in a city where people is active is a must for me specially when considering making coaching my full time gig. Thank you very much for the replies guys; I am planning a trip to Austin over the next few months to see the city. (ATX - get my sightseeing tour ready!)

Oh quick Q, is the riding pancake flat?

Thank you all!

Go do some hill repeats of Jester Blvd or, even better, Beauford and let me know what you think.

Jester: 320 feet of gain in barely over .4 miles, so avg 15% grade.
Beauford: Average pitches up another 1-2%.

More seriously, Austin doesn't have mountains, but it's got plenty of hills that will do the job.
