Subject: Supplement for Race Day tomorrow!!

I've got a triathlon race tomorrow a sprint length event. 700 meter swim 11 mile bike ride 3 mile run.

I'm wanting to know what supplement I could take tonight and tomorrow morning to help boost my muscle endurance. I don't want anything that is going to speed up my heartrate I just need a little extra muscle endurance. I'm thinking of creatine but I haven't used any in years. Is there a fast acting version now that I'll actually notice the effects of by tomorrow afternoon or is it too late in the game to even bother?

I know the general rule of thumb is nothing new on race day but I'm wondering if there is something very safe and simple that I can use that won't throw me off my routine or make my heartrate sky rocket out of control.

Caffiene helps some.  Other than that, I'd say no.

First, welcome to BT!

Second ........ there is absolutely nothing you can do or take that will have any affect on your race ... short of cocaine or a huge shot of caffeine.

Even if you were to take an illegal performance enhancing drug it would make no difference in your abilities overnight.

You will do well if you have trained properly for the event and if you have allowed yourself to rest and recover from your workouts.  There is no magic pill that will make you faster.  And if someone IS advertising that they have one, they are full of sh-t and are out to take your hard earned money.

Good luck in your race and enjoy the experience!!

I'm a big believer in carbo-pro! I load up a few days before big events (marathons, etc.). Seems like your race isnt going to last long so the benefits of "loading" would be small.

Supplements and BT don't seem to get along well. I can't think of anything out there that would give you any muscle boost. As far as energy, look for caffine/gels.

Take a big swig of HTFU right before the gun goes off and s/b/r like your life depends on it.

They don't because most are  bunk and as Rick said, there is no magic pill that's gonna make the OP faster.

You build muscle endurance by training those muscles to endure. Plain and simple. For a short distance like that, if the OP has trained, he will be fine.

I'd even avoid the caffeine if it's not something you've used in training.

I was pretty sure nothing existed that I hadn't already considered.  Thanks for the advice.  Back in the day when I was just a meathead and lifting I took creatine and did notice a measureable gain in the amount of weight and muscle endurance and recovery that it gave me.  I just wanted to see if there was anything similar for a multisport athlete that people actually saw benefit from.

I've trained hard and followed a sprint training calendar for 3 months.  I've give myself lots of rest and avoided injury.  I'm ready but still nervous and letting myself fall victim to my own mind searching for any last advantage I can get my hands or mind on.

The only supplements that will really help you tomorrow are illegal!

The night before a race I like to eat a relatively light dinner early (don't eat something you've never eaten before) and try to get lots of sleep (not always possible). A very light meal some three hours before racetime is good too.

Good luck, and make sure you post your race report!!

Should I really be concerned about my food tonight?  Do I need to bother carb loading for such a short race?  If so what should I eat tonight and tomorrow morning before the race.  It's an afternoon start of 3:30pm.

To add to this - make sure that the night BEFORE the night before the race is a good night's rest, since you may not sleep well the night before. I've read on here at least once that will go a long way in allowing your body enough rest. (So if your race is on Sunday, make sure Friday night is solid, in case Saturday night is a wash).

No, you don't need to bother carbo loading.  With a 3:30pm start, you can probably eat pretty much anything tonight.  For an am start, you just want to make sure it's something you know you digest easily (e.g., spicy mexican food is probably not a good choice for the majority of people).  For you, that will be breakfast tomorrow--eat whatever you normally eat for breakfast.  Eat your last meal around noon or so and make it relatively light.

Good luck!

Nope!

The only thing you really need to do is eat a well balanced meal and make sure you have plenty of fluids (which you should have been doing for days to begin with).  Avoid any food that you know gives you stomach issues (for some that is spicy food, for others it is dairy - you get the idea).

Carbo loading is a 3+ day process that revolves around proper training loads and taxing your glycogen reserves.  There is no such thing as "carbo loading" unless you've fully depleted your glycogen reserves and forced it to compensate.  The only thing you are really doing now is "topping off the tank" to make sure you are ready.

And even for the 2 hour athletes in a sprint, they could do the whole event on their glycogen reserves in their body and barely fully deplete them.  Meaning, you don't even have to eat during the event.

Again, relax, enjoy the experience.  You've put in the training and tomorrow will just be another training day with a finish line!

I live with a water bottle at my side always.  Have for years.

Thanks for the reassurance I've been trying to think of the race as nothing more than my final training session.  I'm going to go all out balls to the wall and try and best all my times.  I don't care where I finish compared to others as long as I kick my own in total race time.

If sty were here he'd recommend DHMO, but it sounds like you have that covered.

What about the baking soda thing where you have some with water before the race to reduce lactic acid build up.  Total b.s. or worth something?

First, for a sprint I wouldn't worry about lactic acid build up.  Second, as said before, nothing new on race day.  If your body doesn't like that idea you are asking for trouble.
