Subject: The dangers of narrow feet

So after the storms passed this morning here in sunny Florida I decided to go for a little ride even though it was suppossed to be a rest day.

I grabbed my bike and sexiest tri shorts and headed out toward Clermont for a little ride. Put on my shoes and got them nice and tight and it seemed that my left one wouldnt get quite tight enough so I ratcheted it down nice and tight. ( Shimano shoes with 2 velcro and a top strap that ratchets) My feet are somewhat narrow so this is pretty common for me to do.

Took my casual little ride, inspected the new area and finished up. Pulled off my front wheel, took of my shirt to put on a clean one, removed my right shoe and then my left....oops it seemed stuck....push on the release again. Nothing. Grab a nice solid tool to push as hard as I can on the release and nothing.

I tugged pulled twisted cursed and laughed and still nothing. So there I stand in a  parking lot in the middle of nowhere in  my crotch hugging shorts, no shirt and one silver colored Shimano shoe. To top it off there was a cute cycling honey in the area so I was trying to figure out how to look composed if she came riding along. Not much chance of that.

Thats it the shoe wins. I probably would have cut it off if I had a knife but for some reason I ddint have one. Finally after what seemer forever I was able to tug the tongue out and pry my foot out.

I know very few things in this world have never happened before but I never imagined this particular scenario. Thank God I wasnt on the clock, lol.

Well on the plus side it gave me a reason to get new shoes. And you can damn sure bet I wont get stuck with one shoe again

That stinks - I have narrow feet as well, and buying cycling shoes is always an adventure for me.  It took me a while before I decided on my Shimanos (still a little loose at times, but not bad all in all).

This probably doesn't do anything for your masculinity, so sorry about that, but have you thought about trying women's shoes?  They will definitely be narrower.

The Male triathlete's Dilemma:

First spandex, then shaving and waxing our legs, now it's women's shoes .... does it ever end?  Here, let me just hand you my giblets in this little purse and you can hang onto for me ... I never really get much use out of them anymore...

I had that happen to me when I was wearing Shimanos, too.  I switched to Sidis and those seem to work better with my narrow feet.

I have this happen occasionally with my Sidis.  I'm not sure what the Shimano ratchet looks like, but the way I get the Sidi to release if I've over-ratcheted the band is to push the band further into the ratchet mechanism while I push down on the release mechanism with my other fingers.  Works every time.

I'll trade my wide and tall (but short! 8 1/2!) sized feet any day...It's all I can do to get 3 ratchet clicks in on my shoes...and I haven't found anywhere local that carries the 'wide' Sidi's...

Well I stopped by a Pearl Izumi outlet on the way home and their ratchets pull outward so that would solve that problem or, since I happen to have "avarege" size for demos, you buy  these

http://www.pearlizumi.com/product.php?mode=view&pc_id=43&product_id=1244022

At half price. They seem a little more narrow, no ratchet. Ill still use the Shimanos and maybe save these for special occassions, lol.  Their Tri shoes seem to runa  hair big or I would have just gotten those but these will work fine for me. At least next time I will only look silly in spandex insteead of spandex and one shoe

Yes that was my first idea but on the Shimanos if you crank them all of the way down, which I did, the ratchet blocks the release from being able to be pushed down because it gets it too close the the binding of the shoe.

Its funny though the ideas that go through your head when you are stuck. I had some great one that I wont mention out of respect for myself.
