Seems as if the only news that was worthy of my co-workers attention this weekend was the repeat publication of the following article:

http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/news/articles/2009/03/29/20090329TriathlonHeartRisks0329.html

In short it states that Triathletes run a higher risk than Marathoners.  Something about cold water and no rest in swimming.  Go figure.

My wife and I saw this on the news last night at which point my wife wanted me to quit training for my tri in May...you know, so I can see the kids grow up, etc.

15 out of a million deaths for triathletes is fairly high (as compared to fatal airplane crashes per flights), but that still leaves 999,985 people who survive triathlons...

Anyway, I suppose sitting on the couch watching TV is the preferred method of heart disease-related deaths people prefer to associate with...

IF I'M GOING DOWN, I'M GOING DOWN IN MURKY WATERS!!!

I think herein lies the problem:

"Triathlons are soaring in popularity, especially as charity fundraisers. They are drawing many people who are not used to such demanding exercise"

Now I'm no Dr. but I would think that experience in training right, eating right and getting adequate rest would nullify or dramatically reduce any sort of "risk" associated with triathlons. I'm sure many of these deaths are associated with people that had underlining heart conditions that they didn't know about and a triathlon just triggered or exacerbated their condition. Triathlon is a great way to start a new lifestyle of healthy living but there are risk that people who are over weight or who have spent many years sitting on the couch should be aware of. This would include a physical and consultations with a Dr. about the approipate level of exercise to jump start a healthier lifestyle.

Did they bother to state the difference between the rate of Triathletes dying from heart failure to couch potatoes?

I read a similar article in Triathlete magazine a couple months ago. It attributed most of those deaths to a condition called SIPE.  Which if I recall correctly was Sudden Intense Pulminary Edema or something to that effect.

Basically there were many different factors, but dehydration, over exhertion, and some other factors played a big part. And it primarily happened around T1

The article did mention that Doctors are in the process of studying the problem and there should be more soon.

Of course the news media only sells fear and will never tell you about the positive impact that the sport is giving. Think of all the people that would have died a slow painfull life on their couches if they had not been motivated to do something.

New goal:

Organize a giant triathlon with exactly 1 million racers. THEN we can count the number of dead after the race. That's how you get real data.

Jesus, I'm in a bad mood today, and I'm taking it out on the boards.

Apparently the problem is a very bored media.   If you can find a crisis....start one.

No, I'm not a Dr but I did stay at a holiday inn express once. If the glove don't fit, you must acquit

What's interesting is that no one has commented on this article on AZcentral.com. Usually the comments are more entertaining than the articles themselves!

1) EVERYTHING has risks!

2) Exercise always outweighs the sedentary lifestyle

3) We're not getting out of this life alive! Enjoy the ride ( or run, or swim or whatever)

4) Pallbearers of athletes have an easier job than pallbearers of couchpotatoes!!!!
