Aero wheels worth the money? (Page 2)

Just curious if any of you guys received your covers yet and what do you think of them? Thanx!

I have one.  Not sure what I think of it yet.  I haven't raced with it yet, was supposed to last summer.

It doesn't quite fit my wheel, which bothers me sense they asked me the exact dimensions, and I measured them as we were on the phone.

I think it'll work though, I used it on a couple training rides.

My 2 cents worth . . . a word of caution on aero bars on a road bike . . . because the bike's geometry is totally different than on a tri-bike, it's possible that you might acheive one thing (getting aero) at the cost of another (getting your body totally out of whack).  Depends on your bike and your build, but with aero bars, you might wind up stretched out really uncomfortably and give up a lot of efficiency in your pedaling due to your posture.  You can tweak the stem and your seat a little bit, but not enough to turn a road bike into a tri bike.  You don't want to get down on your elbows only to find out that you're riding at 85% after a while because you're back is too stretched out or due to some other wierd alignment of your body.

I agree with the above caution. In an attempt to make my road bike more tri like, I put a fast forward seat post on and the only thing I accomplished was wrenching my neck! Promptly took that FF seat post off. I do have aero bars on my road bike. I have adjusted them to make me more comfortable rather than more aero. As a result, I am not as aero as I probably can be. In my book comfort trumps aero. If I am comfortable, I can ride longer and faster. The key is to be comfortable AND aero. That's were I think a tri bike can beat a road bike.

TTFlyWheels.com has a disc wheel for $230 new, its a cover apparently, but still.

Yes, assuming you use it correctly and train with it properly.

You don't need to "train" with an aero set of wheels, it is simply bolt-on speed.

Then it becomes a cost-to-value ratio and that is purely individual.

I have mine but there was some confusion on my part about which PowerTap hub I needed to have it cut for.  Obviously in a 50/50 choice I picked the wrong one and the hub cutout is a bit small.  I am going to make the adjustment cut myself rather than send it back from VA to CA.

Just been too busy to cut it yet.

Made the adjustments to the cover and it fits great.  Took about 10 minutes to install, just 8 plastic screws to attach.  The longest part was removing the cassette because I wanted to clean it.  

 Even cutting it was pretty easy, it's just thinnish plastic.

One thing I've noticed about having a deeper dish wheelset (I have the Reynolds Assault) is that you definitely get pushed around in the wind.  It's kind of a disconcerting feeling if you ask me.  That being said... there is an added benefit even if it is only a "perceived benefit."  And as has been mentioned many times before... the benefit of having an aero helmet is greater than that of aero wheels (in terms of time savings).

No, it is not true at all.

Wheels will give you the largest benefit in speed increase after aero bars.  It's not even a remote contest compared to helmets.

Helmets, when they are used properly and actually provide a benefit (and there are many riders who do NOT gain any sort of reduction to their CoD - see Jeepfleeb and Tritoy just as examples from BT), they are the best VALUE FOR DOLLAR of all aero upgrades.
