Subject: Aero wheels worth the money?
I'd like to try a few things this year to go a little faster on my bike. I'm definitely buying some aero bars, but I'm thinking about trying some kind of aero wheel. I currently have a 2007 Giant OCR3 with the stock wheels. I can't afford to buy a true tri bike, so I'm just going to upgrade my stock components on my OCR3 as much as I can afford. I found some used sets of aero wheels with various dish depths on ebay for pretty reasonable. I'm wondering if anyone knows if this is a worthwhile investment? If I could get a decent set of wheels for, say, maybe $150-$250, would it be money well spent? Do they really make a noticeable difference?

Also, are there any relatively low buck things (besides training more and improving riding technique) that are worth trying?

For the money you're trying to spend I'd buy:

1. An aero helmet (assuming you don't already have one.)

2. Aero bars (looks like you're already on board with this.)

3.  A wheel cover for the rear.

That's pretty low down on the list I think. I would get some clip-on aero bars. I assume you already have clipless pedals.

I don't where you're finding "aero wheels" for $150, regardless, I'm sure your stock wheels are just fine.

$150-250?  used ebay wheels?

you can get some from there but even ebay wheels will cost $600-800.  i just went through a 3 month process of looking for wheels.  to get a decent quality wheels you will have to look at $1000+ new.

I'm probably being optimistic about the prices, although some of the wheelsets are over 10 years old.

Anyhow, I think you guys have talked me out of it for now. I think I'll focus on the aero bars (which I was already planning on doing) and look for an aero helmet.

I'm not sure about the wheel cover idea, though. I don't know much about them, but it seems like the bolt on type wouldn't do much but add weight to a wheel that's already pretty heavy. I'm not sure the aero advantage would outweigh the added weight. How many of you have tried these? Do they actually help?

Aero beats weight. The disk cover is just about universally accepted as at least on par with a true disk wheel. Yes, it's going to be heavier but it's $100 instead of $2,000.

I've been searching for a used carbon disk wheel and I think $300 plus shipping is more realistic. Even that might be on the low side. Aero wheels are expensive!

I picked up a slightly used set of HED.3's and a Renn 575 disc off Ebay for about $425 per wheel and I think I did fairly well.  Don't think you're going to find anything decent in the $150-$250 price range.

I bought my wheels because I could afford them without worrying about it (one of the advantages of being an empty-nester with a good income).

If you're looking for a measureable return on your investment I'd suggest hiring a coach and buying a power meter.

And ride lots...

If you can't afford a tri bike, you can't afford aero wheels.

Get aero bars and a helmet.  The disc cover is for real.  It's worth it.

If you find any wheels for $250 tell me, cause I'll buy them too.

Good luck!

Unless you are doing some major uphill time trials, it will.

How many of you have tried these?

Quite a few, myself included.

Do they actually help?

I use it in every race I do.  I sure hope so.

Thanks for all the replies. I appreciate the input. Having only one triathlon under my belt, I have a lot of questions, mostly regarding biking and swimming. Its good to know that I can come here and get honest answers from experienced triathletes that have tried and tested just about everything under the sun.

I don't understand why aero wheels have to be expensive? Im not that experienced yet but from an untrained eye's point of view a typical aero looks like a deep dish carbon rim with short length direct spokes. Would the rim be a cast or hand made item? I know carbon is expensive but it ican't be so expensive as manufacturers are making out, I would have thought the wheels could be made of a tapered one piece aluminium rim with the spokes mounted like a typical straight spoked wheel with bladed spokes? I just can't justify spending so much on a wheelset when I could buy a damn good second hand bike for the same money

It's not that the carbon material itself is expensive, it's the manufacturing process.  Carbon fiber parts are molded then cured in an autoclave, requiring a significant capital investment in tooling and equipment.  Those costs have to be recaptured; in a relatively small volume market, like that for bike aerowheels, the cost/part is going to be higher.

It's not that the carbon material itself is expensive, it's the manufacturing process R&D and marketing.

Once the molds are created, it may actually be cheaper to produce carbon rims than to extrude aluminum ones.

would anyone like to suggest a best bang per buck wheelset? I like the idea of the standard spoked rim disc cover, seriously cheap and aero! pity the same cant be done for the front trainer.

I searched on ebay and the classifieds on this forum and couldn't find anyone selling these. Maybe I entered the wrong search criteria or spelled it wrong. Does anybody have one they would want to sell?

www.wheelbuilder.com  Not sure anyone ever re-sells covers.  Maybe one on ST awhile back but it was allready cut for a specific wheel.

Best BANG FOR BUCK (best phrase in triathlon) for aero wheels in my book is www.williamscycling.com.  From a bang for buck perspective they bost hybrid ceramic bearings (which make a HUGE difference), zipp speep weaponry technology, and they are pretty affordable.  I swear by this company.

What is the process for getting a disc cover via wheelbuilder.com? Do you buy a disc cover and trim it yourself or do you tell them what wheel you have and they do it for you? Anyone that has used wheelbuilder.com comment on the process?

I was curious too, so I went to the site and it looks like you tell them what type of wheel you are covering (brand, dimensions, specs, etc...) and they customize the fit and mail it out to you.

Neuvation has a few reasonably priced wheels. ROL too. You can get a set for under $400 if you do some research. You might have to make some compromises but I am pretty happy with my neuvations.

Yep,  if you have any questions you can call/e-mail them, I did before I ordered mine and they were very helpful.

I will post pic's when it gets here in a few days.
