Subject: Short Swim vs. Long Swim

I've just started training for my first tri (YAY!) and I am doing two swim sessions a week.  One is a short swim and the other a long swim.  So... my question is:  Should I be more focused on distance or on the amount of time spent?  And, how does that work when breaking it up between speed on my short swim and endurance on my long swim?

Are you swimming in sets or jsut getting in and swimming?  If the latter, I say stop and start swimming in sets, which can be found in various combos for various distances, on the 'net and here at BT.

I wold focus on distance.  Say you want to do a 1500 yd total, find sets that break that up, i.e., 200 warmup, 100 kick, 4 x 50, then set of 8 x 100 on X:XX interval, 100 w/d  (totally made up set)

sets will improve your speed and they will organize your swim better.  always try to swim the distance rather then time.  easier to measure your pace afterwards and mark it for future improvements.

100 - 1:40 on 3/31

100 - 1:37 on 4/1
