Comments:

First leg was CROSS COUNTRY SKIING - Out and back course, or rather up and back down. Course was groomed and icy and had a couple of dry areas which required taking off skis and walking. Going up was fine, but returning downhill was a bit of a challenge; had problems maintaining control on descent and wiped out about four times. I crashed about 100 yards from finish, had problem getting a ski back on, so I ran the rest of the way to transition.
What would you do differently?:

Skiing is my weak leg. Need more time at it, especially downhill.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

When I entered transition there were only three bikes remaining. I handed the support person my skis and poles changed to my cycling shoes and handed off my ski boots. I made a quick trip to the can and returned to find 2 bikes and another skiier approaching T1. Hopped on bike clipped in and took off.

Comments:

Fast descent on pavement into Monticello from Dalton Springs Campground, then south on 191 with headwind and rolling hills. At about mile 9 made the turn onto gravel road had a few more rolling hills before steep descent with switchbacks into canyon. Used bike time to hydrate; only one drink station during run. Beautiful scenery in canyon country, but no time to enjoy; gotta make up some time.
Transition 2

Comments:

Handed off bike and remaining bike gear to support staff. Swapped shoes and took off running.
Run
  • 1h 02m 50s
  • 5 miles
  • 12m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

Out and back on mostly level dirt road along canyon base. Pushed the pace to make cut-off time, but still enjoyed the canyon beauty. Passed more people than passed me, and finished about a minute before cut off.
Post race
Warm down:

Had a burger. My wife loaded up my gear while I was doing the run leg (I love my wife). Relaxed while my wife drove us up to Moab (I really love my wife).

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Skill level going downhill on skinny skis and icy conditions.
