A while back I posted about the problem I was having getting a satellite signal on my 305. For the past several outings I have kept the 305 on the docking cradle plugged into the laptop. It's not turned on but does show the scrolling message "battery charging complete"

Every time I've used the watch from the cradle to immediately outside I've gotten a signal almost instantly.  If I leave the watch disconnected but turned off for a length of time and then go outside it takes 5+ minutes to pick up a signal.

Don't know why, but I'm happy.

Just out of curiousity, how frequently/infrequently do you use your Forerunner?

GPS units have a "warm acquisition" and a "cold acquisition". Warm is basically where the unit has current ephemeris (satellite) data and cold is when that data has expired and it has to basically download again. Usually Garmin publishes these times as part of the specs but I don't seem to see it. Unofficially just browsing around I've seen that the times are both below 1 minute but I know that it can take longer. On a rare occassion if I haven't used my watch for a while it can take some 3 minutes.

It especially won't be happy if you start moving before it has had a chance to acquire. Glad to hear you've worked it out though!

In the summer it's just about every day. Winter, maybe every other or third day maybe.

If I finish a workout, turn the unit off without  downloading data then leave it till the next day and head out again, it will go back to it's long search time.
