Subject: 50+ mile rides in the area?

You guys know of any decent distance rides 50+ miles within decent driving distance from DC?  Or point me to a good site that lists them.

I know I can do 50 on W&OD but been there done that many times.

Trying to get ready for Cap-Cap Century.

From arlington driving out towards leesburg has some great riding, also south of potomac mills (but I dont know that area well), and over to MD both western MOCO, and western HOCO, and southern MD has plenty of open roads

I like to search through mapmyride and pick out routes

I know there is great cycling out near The Plains and Middleburg. I have supported, but not ridden in the MS150 out there and it is really pretty. I don't think it would be hard to make a route just looking at the map. Most of the roads are two lane country roads.

I am also interested in rides other the W&OD. I get tired of stopping every mile for a road or other people.

Middleburg to Front Royal / Winchester area is GREAT.

I also like Point of Rocks / Poolesville for quiet country roads.

Thurmont to Hagerstown for some hills.

There is the Tour de Madison next month, April the 16th.  They do a few lengths, I roughly plan to do the 62 mile length.  It is supposed to be a pretty ride.

Check my map on 4/4/09; this was a nice ride from Gainesville up north of Middleburg and back ... metric century.  I can send you the queue sheet if you'd like.

Scott & Jim's Favorite Bike Rides is a great book to get ... has all the queue sheets ready to go for photocopying/exporting.

Regards,

pgd

That tour de madison looks outstanding. I am totally in so long work cooperates. Don't think I'll be ready for the Metric C that early though. I think I'll do the 40.

Sorry for my Hijack, now for my input: www.mapmytri.com has some creative loops in and around alexandria.

There are a couple of places where you're on 50; one place is about 1.7mi, another is less than 1.0mi.  Snickersville Tpk was a bit busy, but in the past, when I've done Snikersville on Sunday morning, it's been very quiet.  This past Saturday was a bit more busy because we hit it on Saturday around 11-12.

All-in-all, it was a great ride.

no problem. i've been slowly trying to improve it over the last few years. some of the rides are stolen from this book that shelly already recommended.
lots of great rides in that book, i just didn't like the format of the cue sheets in it or i had to re-route/combine a few of them.

My plan is to use your spreadsheet and add my rides to it.
