Subject: Anyone on/been on blood thinners?

Ruptured my Achilles about 6 weeks ago, and then this past week I developed a DVT (blood clot) in my injured leg, one of the possible complications from surgery.  The doc has me on blood thinners.  My expectation is that I'll be able to swim (although no swim races) and run once my Achilles has recovered, but I won't be able to bike outside due to the risk of a fall, and potential bleeding.

Anyone been through this, and what tri-related activities did your doctor give, or not give, you the OK to do, and how long after treatment were you allowed to?

thanks.

I've been on Coumadin since my open heart surgery eight years ago when I got  a mechanical aortic valve.

I've crashed on my bike at +20 mph and am still am here to tell about it.

My doctors have actually encouraged my triathlon training.  Being on blood thinners is no big deal if you take reasonable precautions (like always wearing your helmet).

My dad has been on warfarin (Coumadin) since 1990 (he was briefly off for a while but then put back on it). While bruises can be spectacular, so far as i know he's not banned from anything.

This, of course, requires some time (and blood draws) to figure out the appropriate dosage so that the blood is thin enough but not too thin.

Really... wow.  My doc, at least for now, recommended that I stay off the bike (outside of course, not the trainer).  That's good to know, thanks.  It's a little early for me yet to get out on the bike but when my Achilles heals, I am going to ask about biking.  Would suck to not be able to bike until October.

All I've been "banned" from is football.

Yeah, great doctor I have.  Banning a 37-year old from playing football.  As if many of us play football at this age.

I have been on coumadin a few times and had one doctor not want me to ride my bike (or do anything other than walking and range of motion exercises) and another who just said I might get some nice bruises if I fell.  The first doc was old and old fashioned, imho, and the second more up to date.

I also have asthma and had a pediatrician who wrote me notes to get out of gym class until I was in high school.  In HS I switched docs due to a move and he wouldn't write me a note...just told me to bring my inhaler to gym class!  Anyway, my point is you may want to get a 2nd opinion.
