hey all.  i've been swimming and running for about 3 months and i have my first sprint tri coming up in june.  today i figured would be a good day to see how i'd fair doing the 1/2 mile (32 laps in my gym's 25m pool) swim.  this was my first time ever attempting this many laps without a break.

i did a few laps to get my heart rate up and steady and then i began my laps.  i started doing strictly freestyle stroke and after about 15 laps i had to alternate between freestyle, backstroke and breast stroke because my upper body began to fatigue.  i finished the 32 laps in approximately 25 minutes (times it on a wall clock).  i was tired afterwards but, after i caught my breath for a minute felt ok.

so yes, please laugh at me and then feel free to offer any help, tips or advice to cut this time down!

oh man, you STINK! ha ha ha

Joking, that's really not that bad. Just swim more and work in some sets and try to keep your elbows up so you don't stress your shoulders.

Simple question probably... but did you do 32 laps or 32 lengths? Just curious.

woops, i meant lengths! (starting on one end and ending on the other =1)  i'm sorry, about the newb mistake!

my math (please correct me if i'm wrong)

1 mile = 1,609.334 meters
1/2 mile = 804.667 meters
804.667/25 meter pool = 32.186 lengths

Won't happen bro. If they pull you off the course and you're not drowing, I'd find a different race anyways.

Good work on the swim, getting to that point is a milestone, and many of us start out changing up strokes to make it through a length like that. You'll get better, keep at it!

Swimming 800-and-change meters in 25 minutes is nowhere close to getting pulled off the course, no worries.

i hear ya.  it's also weird for me because i've only gotten comfortable with swimming when i began training for this tri.  prior to this i was really freaked out about swimming with my head underwater and learning how to properly breathe.

Nice job.  I have my 2nd coming up with a 800 meter swim.  I am projecting 20-21 minutes.  According to last years results the slowest was 29 minutes.  You did great, good luck on your Tri!

Hey man, you did it.  How many people (besides BT folks) do you know that would even try that?

Great Job!

I finished my first tri last summer with a 1/2 mile swim in 25 minutes.  I wasn't the last one out of the water and wasn't even close to getting pulled (35 minutes was the time limit).  Besides you have more time to train and the adrenaline of the race will move you faster.  You should be proud of your results, great job.

*points and laughs      (sarcasm)

You swam 25mins nonstop. You completed it. You didn't drown. What's to laugh at? Sure some here are faster, but think, they've done it longer than 3months. You're still new to it and you did it. I'd say congrats!

By the way, go throw it in your logs so you can keep a record of it. Then as you progress you'll be able to see the changes. And, if you have any more questions, we'll be able to help you better.

For advice, swim more. Don't worry about sprinting, just swim more. Do worry about drills and total volume though. Give it time, and you'll come around.

Good job on the continous swim time!  You asked how to get faster in your OP... I am not a swim coach so I will keep it very basic... improve efficiency and smoothness and you will see improvements in speed.  Coaching, drills, or even a video (Total Immersion) to give you some good techniques for improved effeciency!

And like others have posted, you are as good as golden for a swim time... no worries of being pulled at that distance and time.  Keep up the good work!
