If you park at the HS how do they know you are not a resident?  I live in canton. Next town over.  I think I'll just bring my bike.  Would this help sqash the in-town confusion?  How is the water this time of the year?  I dont have a wetsuit!!!

Mystic is freakishly warm - I went at 6:30am last Friday and it was FINE. We were wearing wetsuits, but I'm quite certain I would have been fine, temperature wise, without one.

snl_323 - 2009-05-15 2:00 PM I'm on the south shore (Quincy) and was wondering if anyone swam at Houghton's Pond in the Blue Hills. Also, any other places in the Quincy area for OWS?

I'm training for my first tri and still trying to figure out good places for OWS.

Thanks!

I am in Hingham and rcberto is in Weymouth and he doesn't know it yet, but I found a cove at the end of my street, right where the Hingham Shipyard is where we are going to be swimming a lot this year.  Open water, no boats, no people, it's going to be perfect.  We will keep you posted.

Be sure to keep peeps posted for that! That is a pretty short drive for me and I as much as I do love Walden and all, it takes me 45 min to get out there...

Here is a map of the area.  It's in a cove behind conservation land.  You can access it by the beach at the end of my street.  There are no boats or bouys in the area the I highlighted.

The beach north of the cove in this picture (off Beach Road) is where we swam last year in 32.5 degree water right?

You are a wimp.  It wasn't that cold for someone with a full wetsuit.  Yes that was the place.

Are you saying my sleeveless, ill-fitting, kayak wetsuit may have been a factor in my near hypothermia?

I'm down to swim whenever.  I just swam on the ocean side down on the cape and while cold it was definitely doable.

have you tried this out yet? what's the verdict? it's not too far from my house, so maybe I'll check it out.

and on a related subject - swam in Mystic Lake yesterday with no wetsuit - plenty warm, although I don't know the exact temperature.

thanks!

Born and raised in Webster, so I know how to say Lake Chargoggagoggmanchargoggagoggchabunagungamogg (and spell it right . . . or close enough!).

I just moved to the Newton area and have seen people swimming in Crystal Lake.  The website has a lot of rules and regulations on it about where and when swimming is allowed, so does anyone train here?
Do you only swim during the posted hours?
Did you purchase the Season Swim permit?

Does anyone know what time Walden parking lot opens?  I am trying to find a place to swim a couple days a week in the morning before work.  I would have to start my swim around 5-5:30.  Any thoughts?

I think the gate at Walden opens at 6 or 6:30.  The recommendation is to park on the paved circle next to the park office/green house across the street from the beach.  I know there is a group that regularly meets there on Thursdays at 5:30-5:45.  There are also other groups and individuals that swim there other mornings as well.

Great to see other Boston area athletes here.  I am training for an IM race in November and looking to add some open water training to schedule.  I live on the South Shore and hoping to find some swim partners interested in meeting early mornings for swims at Nantasket Beach or Duxbury beach.  Confident in my swimming but don't want to go solo in the ocean.  If you know anyone or have any recommendations, send me a PM.  Good luck.
