Subject: Brake Pads for Carbon Wheels

Question, I road most of last year with the same brake pads for both my carbon and aluminum wheels.  I now understand I shouldn't do that.   Are there carbon specific pads or should i just use a different set for the 2 sets of wheels..

there are pads made strictly for carbon wheels, they cool quicker and are made of a material that does not build up heat as quickly as normal pads. The eopxy used to build carbon wheels does not tolerate heat much over 150* Farenheit before it starts to break down. If you look at Kool Stops, Mavic or Zipp pads, you will see ones made specifially for carbon wheels. Keep in mind that if your carbon wheels have the metal strip where the brakes go, then you do not need special pads, the same pads will work. I wanna say that the carbon specific pads have more or are cork, but i could be wrong there.

Here is a set from Mavic

Zipp

and Koolstop

Good luck!!

I use the kool-stop pads on my Zipp wheels.
I found mine on on eBay : $18 for both front & rear pads.

Do you swap them back and forth when you ride carbon and alumunium rims.

I used yellow swiss stop last 1.5 years and found they didn't work so well when it was wet like IMLP last summer. Have you tired kool-stops in the rain?
