bachorb - 2009-04-15 12:06 AM I am looking at a change in my work schedule starting in May and it's going to work out that it will be much more convenient to do most of my two-a-day workouts during the work week one right after the other. Anyone out there do this currently? I feel like so long as one of those workouts is a swim it shouldn't be too big of a problem but I could be wrong. I am curious what others have experienced.

I work a swing shift and have the same issues.  Sometimes I run on the tread mill and then swim right after.  Sometimes I may run.swim in the morning and then ride with the bike club that night.  I get them both in but not always back to back.  I don't think it matters that they aren't back2back all the time.  I do try and get some bricks in just to keep the body used to going from the bike to the run.

I try to avoid doing so as much as possible, as this gives me the most recivery time between each workout. that said there are times when i cant really get around it, but i tend to do much better not having back to back workouts. your total trainning load will effect this as well though.

on a side note i love how people seem to think as long as one is a swim its ok.....

I currently have to be at work by 6 am so this makes getting in a morning workout very difficult.  This has forced me to do a swim and run workout back to back twice a week.  While this isn't ideal, I've never felt really run down or worn out by them.  In fact the majority of the time I feel like I've gotten in 2 good, quality workouts

I end up having to do this a lot for logistical reasons.  As long as one of the workouts is an easier one (for example, a Z2 run or bike, or a swim devoted mostly to drills and form rather than hard sets) I don't find it to be a problem.

I do this often due to scheduling issues as well. With the right sleep and food, it's definitely doable.

Due to my pool having poor hours I do Swim/Run & Swim/Bike workouts a couple times a week.  I feel like this is a good way to give myself a better cardio w/o without overdoing it on either the swim, bike or run.
I don't see anything wrong with it, as long as you try to keep them seperated.  Some weeks I get stuck into doing a s/r workout followed up the next day with a s/b.  I notice my bike ride tends to suffer when doing back to back hard days like this.

x2. Unless it's a transition or brick workout, it's not ideal. The quality of a training session in general will be better given an opportunity to recover in between. And yes, if you think a swim workout is ok, you likely aren't swimming nearly hard enough!

I have kids and want to actually see em when I get home from work so its pretty much do everything in the AM.  Exceptions are early AM long rides on the weekend, but then I am usually back home 10 or 11am latest.  Managed up three hour brick before work a few times for MOO 07 and will likely see the same this summer.

Do it all the time.

I'm sure separtating them by rest is better, no question.  If I was a pro, trying to be a pro, or had ample time, I'd definitely do it this way.

The question is doing two back to back better than only doing one and not doing the other at all due to lack of time.  I believe it is.

Pretty much every day for me too. I've done 42 bricks so far in 2009. I admit that my training philosophy is different than most. But if I'm going to be racing a run after a bike which adds up to four hours (HIM), I want to be in shape to do that same thing often and casually in a workout. I also want to be in shape to recover from that workout without requiring a rest day. It's a 3-year project for me. This isn't advice for anybody.

x2 on that as well. Volume is still usually the best thing.

I do back-to-back workouts all the time also, as it's just easier to get to gym with Little One once rather than twice. Of course that's IF I can fit it in under the 2 hour kidsclub limit.

I posted , Always Be Brickin', a little while ago with the same question.  Some of the coaches agreed that splitting workouts will usually support a better overall workout.  If I separate my swim & run today, I'd probably get a better quality run in....but I've found if I separate them I'm less likely to get the evening round in at all.

my 2¢.

I do it all the time. This is just a hobby, get in as much as possible in as little time as possible is my motto. Not ideal, but better than just doning one and skipping one, and there's only so much time in the day to split.

Why? Our tri club has this option on Tues/Thurs - bike and then swim after. We also have a swim option in the morning, too. But I don't see how it's detrimental, at least, I haven't found it to be.

I think the point he was making is that some days you should be swimming so hard you shouldn't and wouldn't want to do anything after.  Sure, on the days that you are doing longer sets at slower paces doing something after or before isn't so bad.  But if you are really tearing it up in the water (as you should be most of the time if you want to be a good swimmer), doing things after or before is a lot harder.

Sometimes you have to do whatever you have to do to accomodate your training; and as we know any training is better than no training. That been said, you should also know and understand that doing two training session back two back will have a different impact on your total training load and produce maybe not the optimal training adaptations intended if thet were done apart.

By swimming and then running or biking or whatever you are depleting your energy sources hence the 2nd session will not be as optimal as the 1st or as if you would do it apart so you can be ready to push 100%.  Also by doing one long session instead of two shorter ones apart it might caase you to require a bit longer recovery time hence the next session might be more challenging.

*IF* or when possible try to do follow your plan and do sessions apart if they are intended that way; if due to logistics, life priorities, schedule, etc. you can't then do them back to back but make sure to start the session prorperly fueled, also fuel while training and make sure to refuel, coold down, etc when done to enhance recovery process for next session/day. Also you could tweak the plan so you do the quality sessions when rested and the easy ones back to back as long as you recover enough to train the next day.

See what works for you, you'll have to find out by trying. Good luck!

it depends on the goal of the session. sometimes it is intended to work that way, some other times it isn't

Just because I plan a week of training for an athlete with 2 sessions per day it doesn't mean I planned for the athlete to do those back to back. In fact only when I specify it that way they all are meant to be done at different times of the day so he/she can be recovered/refueled before training again.

In your case maybe your coach/tri-club now your specific needs and is itended that way?

If you two a days all at the same time, doesn't that make it a once a day?  Cool
