mrwrite - 2009-07-03 11:53 PM I keep hearing that the Clydesdale division was created for the muscular, taller, 200-plus pounders. Anybody have a link or documentation of that or is it just considered truth because it's said so often?
Unfortunately I can't give a link or documentation but when I first started doing tri's a few years ago I remember reading about the clydesdale class in the magazine you get with you USAT membership.

I did my first tri today as a clyde.  I won the division by more than 10 minutes.  I looked and I would have placed 3rd in the 30-34 age class.  I am currently 6'2 220 down from 245.  The race was listed as a 600m/22mile/6mile, but I think it was a little less because I finished in 1hr 51min.

nice comment, but lets wait until my HIM in 54 days.  I sure wish I could buy a tri bike, but my cracked frame road bike will have to get me the speed I need for another tri.

besides the swim - that is basically an oly - and sub 2 IS FAST FOR AN OLY.

cracked frame makes me nervous though, did you talk to a bike guy to make sure that is safe to ride?  i'd be nervous about hitting a bump/hole in the road and ending my race because my bike has structural damage to it...

Just a side note here.... I am a clyde, but entered my last race in open division. I finished 2nd ag, and 9th overall, so we can be big and still fast! It did feel incredible to win in an open, no holds barred kind of way.... It was only a sprint, but super pumped... that said, I still understand why this division exists, and why for some people it is appropriate! In a HIM, I will be entering clyde, likely for the last time, this september... Next season, nothing but open divisions and sub 200 lbs!

Being a Clyde I figured I would "weigh" in here.  I finished my first tri Sunday.  It was a sprint (750m swim/12.4 mile bike/5K run) and finished in 1:23:30.  I did finish first in my Clyde category.  I think that this time would have placed me 4th in my AG of 40-44.  Honestly the plaque is not hanging up in my office but the finisher medal is proudly displayed.  I hope to race in the same event next year and I hope to cut my time to 1:15:00.  I would not care if I finished dead last in my AG or Clyde division, or overall if I could post that time.  For me it is about personal improvement.  I am not looking to turn pro anytime soon, lol.

I usually compete as an Athena, and usually win the division by a significant margin--my blog title "I'm faster than I look" holds true!    However, I just registered AG for a local race where I've won Athena a few times, just because I want to race with my same-aged pals instead of being in the last wave of swimmers to start.

One thing I've noticed over the years is that most people have no clue about Athena/Clydes division, especially non-triathletes, and even AGers often aren't really sure about what it means.  I often have to say "I race Athena, the over-150 pound women's division" just to explain it.  Then I have to talk about my weight.  Which I am not fond of doing!  Generally I race Athena to show that there are big, strong, fast ladies out there and to encourage other women to get into the sport no matter what their body type is.

They seem to have cut these categories here in Canada.  So we just have elite and age groups.  Might be interesting, though.  I have weight to lose, but for me to be under 150 lbs I would be anorexic - I certainly would not have the strength to compete in any sort of athletic event!  On the other hand, I noticed that many of the women in my age group (40-45) are also heavier than the young sprites, so maybe the age grouping does enough to accomodate for being larger as well.  Interesting, though....

I may have missed some posts, but let's not forget that for USAT purposes... racing out of AG takes you out of running for standings and invitational bids.

I agree with a previous post. There will always be those that 'haters' saying you don't belong in Clydesdale. I am 6'6" and 230lbs when in race weight. And have been questioned on more than one occasion if I should be in c/a.
