So i bought a cervelo soloist alum. bike to replace my trek FX7.3 "hybrid" bike.  I had dropped the handlebar and put on clip-on aerobars on the trek.
The cervelo at 21 lbs is 5lbs lighter than the trek was.

The Test:
Same seat, same wheels (but with skinnier tires), same aerobars, same pedals/shoes, same clothes, same time of day, same physical status, same 12mi route (no stops/traffic/lights - my empty neighborhood road).

Trek 4 days ago, a PR at that time: 39:35/18.17mph

Cervelo today: 37:12/19.35mph

SO WORTH IT.

Over two minutes faster in a sprint tri?  priceless.

Cheers,
steve

OK so not even nearly as "proper" a comparison but I went from riding my 15 year old MTB last year to buying a Cervelo P2C a couple weeks ago (with a proper fit!!!) and well let's just say I say you CAN buy speed!!!!!  The ONLY time I EVER averaged 20mph last year was a sprint in Oct and I was right at 20mph and it was a flat course.....today I went for a "quick" 56.5 mile spin on the still new to me tri-bike and averaged over 21mph!!  So yeah SO WORTH IT!!!!  Enjoy your Cervelo----I know I'm loving mine

Steve the REALLY cool thing about a new bike is you get motivated to ride more... ride "lots" even as people say around here. That PR will grow exponentially. Congrats!

Great to hear, congrats on the new family member! I actually ride a 7.2FX hybrid and plan on using it for my whole first season, without adding drops of Clip Ons. assuming I get hooked in the racing my plan is next winter/spring to get a new bike (probably a road bike) and hope for the best. You post just makes me want to support the economy sooner though...

Bel-
Ebay yourself up some clip on aerobars.  Right Now.  Lower the handlebar by flipping the stem and moving it to the bottom of the stack.  Move rear seat forward, then setup the aerobars.
A proper fit?  Nope.
Comfy for longer rides because your elbows are supporting your torso? Yep.
You'll go faster if headwinds are involved because you present less to the wind.  You'll train more 'cause you feel "cooler" in drops.  It worked for 5 months and two sprint tri races for me.

cheers,
steve

I agree - SOOOOOOO worth it.

On my first ride with my new bike, Scott Plasma Contessa, my friends said to me that they were going to sprint the next straight road and would wait for me at the turn as usual.  I think I got more of a surprise than they did when I went flying past them and had to wait for them at the turn.  It was great.

I also did my second IM last weekend and took over 1 hour off my first ride time (it might have also had something to do with the fact that I trained over 2000km more than the first time, but alot of it had to do with the bike).
