Subject: Bicycle stolen in transition?
Has this ever happened? How do you protect against it? Lock it in the transition area?

Nothing's impossible as long as there are idiots out there. However, I've never heard of it happening and any race I've been too has pretty good security around T1. Most don't let you in if you don't have a race number either. It's probably more safe that locking your bike downtown somewhere. Don't lock it in T1...would take too much time to get it loose during the race.

There are usually people on both sides of the transition area and normally they try to look at the number tag on the bike and match it to the person's number written on them. I have seen them do this after the race also to make sure someone isn't stealing anothers bike.

I've only done one tri before but it seems to me like there's a triathlete honor code, similar to a camper honor code.

I've camped all my life and for the million times I've been, from Yosemite to Yellowstone to Sequoia National Forest and to smaller parks, every camper leaves their stuff out and nobody takes anything.

I imagine this is mistakes a lot of the time. People accidentally picking up the wrong gear. I would never steal anything anyway but stealing from a fellow athlete seems unconceivable.

I've never heard of this happening, and there's been good security even at small events I've done. I've never lost anything, but my gear's not all that nice either. Probably not a big risk for theft.

Your bike should get your number and you are not supposed to be let out of the transition without a matching bike/bib #.
