Derek - thanks, two of the three are just about an hour away. I need new shoes but have put off buying them b/c I don't know what I need, but didn't know where to find a store who had people who could help me (i.e., not teenagers being paid minimum wage who only know how to go back to the stockroom and look for a certain size).

I simply can not wear Nike's, they really put the squeeze on my feet. For distance running I wear a pair of Saucony(sp), they have really held up well but I need a new set soon. For races or speed work I wear Asics. They feel great on my feet and are light. I can wear them up to a 10k distance without my feet feeling sore the next day.

sharonnagy5 - 2005-04-07 9:46 AM Renee, Yeah...I have read about that, too. I even wonder if I'm landing correctly on my feet when jogging, but last night went sooo much better for me. No shin pain, and really lasted a while. (finally it's all working!!) But, having an evaluation at a running store would be a cool thing. I just don't know of any here in the area...I'll have to find out. How much $$$ are we talking, here, though??

Not sure where you live, but try this link for specialty running store locations in your area http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,5033,s6-52-70-0-1048,00.html

Good Luck

Chris

I've gotten several pieces of Nike running gear (lived near an outlet for a while, so it was dirt cheap) that were made like the people who designed them never ran a step. Zippers where they poked you in the ankle, things attached that JINGLED when I ran, and the shoes are crap. Nike seems to design sports fashion, not clothes for actually doing any sport.

after spending much much time trying different shoes, brands, models and hours in podiatrists...
i really think that for proper running the best shoes are NB, Asics or Saucany but for me personally Asics have always worked out the best especially Asics Kayanos..
but i do suggest maybe having a check-up with a podiatrist to see whether you pronate/supinate as this makes a huge difference to the type of shoes you are looking at buying

Rower - 2005-04-07 8:55 AM ...Plus I do not like Nike because of its Labor practices...

My husband won't buy Nike anything--not necessarily because of labour practices, but because he feels they are just too pervasive in the marketplace--they're everywhere.

I loved Saucony for years (never ran in them though). Bought a pair of New Balance, but it was a bad running-store experience, and I ended up with shoes WAY too narrow for my foot, and too embarrassed to return them. (Should have tried to sell them on eBay I guess).

My current shoe is Asics 2090s. I really like them, but they gave me a few problems in the beginning, and after 100+ miles, I'm starting to think it might be time for a new pair. I'd like to try Mizunos, since I've heard such good things about them.

I haven't seen "Saucony" in stores here? Not familiar with this brand. Learn something new everyday...thanks for the replies, all!

So I guess you can tell from the responses that it is really about the model of the shoe and not so much about the brand.

As for the blisters, you may want to look at your socks. I visited a podiatrist today for the same problem (I tried multiple shoes and been fitted at running stores) and he suggested Thorlo running or tennis socks. I'm buying some tonight.

You could also try putting Body glide on your feet. That is successful for me until about the 5km mark.

Thanks, Jen...Keep me posted if the thickness of those socks is ok. I just wonder if the shoes will end up too tight.

Any real running store should have Sauconys. They only make running shoes. I think it's a NY company. No pair of Sauconys has ever hurt my feet even for a minute. They fit great from the moment I put them on until I wear them out!

When I started running (at 30, for goodness sake!) I wore a pair of 'tennis' shoes I had lying around the house (wow). When I decided to keep at it, I knew I needed more information about running shoes, but I lived in a small town and did not even know what was out there. So I went to the public library to look at back issues of Runners' World magazine. They do a shoe review issue every year that pretty much outlines every shoe there is and what kind of runner each shoe is designed for i.e over pronators, under pronators, if you need stability or cushioning, etc etc. If you have been running in the shoes you have for any length of time, it should be fairly apparent from the wear pattern on the shoes how you are "wearing" them. Based on that you can at least get a general idea of what direction to be looking in for "type", then after that "brand" would be based on how the shoe feels on your foot. All of this ramble being based on someone who may not have access to professional gait analysis or anything that in depth that you can get in a larger city, or who is watching their funds. In the end I found I needed cushioning shoes more than anything else, to help offset some shin splints, and I loved the feel of Adidas on my foot, so I have been happily wearing the Adidas line for years. I've worn Response and Boston, and they were both great. It's all based on you!
Good luck in your quest.

I didn't go in within a brand mindset; only to find the most comfortable pair of running shoes.

I chose Asics Labrinth, but I am not dedicated to them as the only brand that I will ever run in, but they are the best pair of running shoes that I have ever had.

Next time, I will do the same thing. Try out the Brooks, Saucony, etc, but Asics already has a leg up.

I must venture out of the cave I've been living in, and see what's out there, with regards to shoe-ware. I have never heard of most of these brands. Guess they're not advertised at all?
Come to think of it, there's a "Fleet Feet" about 15 minutes from where I live, and I think they pretty much handle running shoes and the like. I've been in there before...and nearly fell over at the prices of their running shoes...I think they start at like $150??

I'll have to check them out, though.

I'm running with Brooks Adrenaline. However, good brands are the ones that fit your feet and running style. Go to running store and salepeople will help find the right one. Don't worry too much about brand.

Asics is my first choice, the second and the third. I still use my 2090, although they have over 600km on them, recently got the Gel DS Racer (just love that green color) and the last pair was the Gel DS Trainer X. I thought about the new 2100, but ended up with the latest I mentioned. In fact I have a mild pronation and I land pretty much in mid-foot rather than the heel as most people do. That's why I chose those models. The Gel DS are both extrmely light at less than 285 grams, and feel just perfect.

I tried Nike, did not like them at all, used Adidas for a while, and today I only use them as my gym shoes since I don't take them out (I don't run in the gym), and I also tried the Mizuno which seemed pretty decent as well.

Wow Renee you got your Mizuno's for $90? Man I've got to start looking for stuff online. my Mizuno's in Aust cost me $200. the most I've ever spent on a pair of shoes. (they are definately worth it for me though)

I've tried so many different brands of shoe. I've got extremly flat feet and have finally found the perfect type of shoe for my feet!

It's very true what everyone has said its not the brand of shoe its what type of foot you have and the shoe that fits the best. If yo ucan find a shoe store taht does foot analysis and gait analysis that would be helpful.

Also the part about the shoe being a half size too big is not true. so be careful. my podiatrist stressed that it was very important for your shoe to fit correctly not too small not too big. but snugly. that way your foot is not going to move around in the shoe hence causing blisters or the support moving to the wrong area of the foot.
He also said that if the shoe is slightly too big when you start running your feet sweat and obviously the shoe is going to get a little bigger with sweaty feet in them. So please make sure you get the correct size.

You've all given me food for thought, and I might try to get to Fleet Feet over the weekend or next. I still have blisters, and I need to jog tomorrow. *sigh* Maybe I can get the socks to help for the time being. I don't dislike the Avia brand that I wear, they are comfortable, but maybe not the best "type" for longer distances. That's what I'm thinking.
Thanks for the advice, all!

Happy Friday to ya!
