After hearing Mike's story, I got to thinking about all the crazy things drivers have done to me over the years. Thought it would make a good thread to hear some other's stories too.
A few of the things I've had thrown at me while running: Handful of coins (pennies at 40mph DON'T feel good), water balloons (didn't mind that too much...it was a hot day!), a 2x4 board (it missed thankfully), multiple beer and pop cans.
While riding I've had crazies swerve at me, throw cans, had a large bolt thrown at me, and I love the guys who sneak up behind you and honk. Glad I have steady nerves!
Let's hear some more about the crazy things that have happened to people while they're just 'mindin' their own bidness!'

Dude....where do you run/ride? Is it near a work release prison or mental institution? The worse thing thats ever happened to me was dodging a 99 year old lady behind the wheel of her 1975 oldsmobile 88.

i was on a ride and i went round a bend without stopping at the lines. A car was going along the other way  and  i nearly eneded up hitting her. She had to go up the curb and she just stayed in her car in the middle of the road in shock. I was inches away from her car. Im glad the bike was ok. lol

I just ride and run on the roads around home. Pretty weird stuff but it's not quite as bad as it sounds. All those things have happened over the course of nearly 20 years on the roads so averaged out it's not too bad. Just a lot of freaks out there. Keep the ol' eyes wide open all the time.

The high point would have to be a couple of guys slowing down to wave a porn magazine out the window at me while I was cycling alone on a fairly isolated road.

Worst that has happened is there is a family that thinks they still live in the boonies. (to their credit they did..... 20 years ago) Now the subdivisions etc. surround them. Anyhow sometimes they let their Rot / Shepard mix run free. Been chased a couple of times by the beast till I turned and chased it. Don't know if I want to do that again since that dog could decide not to run.

Other than that the only issues I've had has been typical high school driver foolishness.

I was chased down by a Jack Russell Terrier the other day. That was a little demoralizing. Other than that, nothing other than the rednecks who get real exciting to see a girl in spandex and decide to drive right next to me and stare for a while.... :-P

This is long, but I kind of had fun with this encounter. I was on a street that was two fairly narrow lanes of traffic in my direction and no shoulder that takes me to a very nice kind-of-sort-of highway that's great for riding (for Austinites, I was on Slaughter heading west over to Mopac). This road is always a little nerve-wracking, since the lanes are so narrow. It's early evening so there's a decent amount of traffic. I'm cruising along at about 17 or 18 mph when a truck about 1 foot off my rear wheel honks at me. It then moved a bit to the left and went around me. Now, I'm not a total hothead, but I don't have a lot of patience with rude, inconsiderate, or dangerous people, so I casually flipped the truck off as it pulled away from me, shaking my head as I did so.

About 1/2 mile ahead or so, there's a stoplight where I need get in the left turn lane. It turns out the pick up is still in the right hand turn lane so I look over for several seconds. The lady rolls down her window and I say in a very polite and congenial voice, "You can take that horn and shove it right up your ass." I know, I know, hardly the way to calm the situation. Anyway, she starts yelling that I shouldn't be on the road moving that slowly and blocking traffic. I respond that I have just as much right as she does to be there. She tells me I'm wrong, that I don't. I tell her I'll gladly pull off to the side and discuss it with her. At which point she actually did. So I get myself turned around and head over to the shoulder where she's pulled off. Her passenger gets out of the truck with her cell phone in her hand, apparently ready to call 911 if I turn out to be some lunatic. I actually think this is sensible. The resulting conversation goes something like this:

"You were out of line to honk your horn at me."
"You shouldn't be on the road going that slowly."
"I have just as much right to ride on that road as you do to drive on it."
"You're wrong. You shouldn't be riding there."
"Check the Texas Transportation Code. I'm perfectly legal riding there."
"Not when you're going so slowly and almost cause an accident."
"My speed is irrelevant. I'm legally entitled to ride on any street that has not been otherwise prohibited as long as I ride as far to the right as is reasonable given road conditions and hazards."
"You weren't on the right, you were in the middle of the road!"
"Hardly, the only time my line veered from the right side of the lane was when you honked at me."
"You almost caused an accident! The guy behind me was coming up way to fast and almost hit me!"
"How is that my fault? Honking at me is hardly going to help. All it's going to do is startle me into veering right in front of you, just as it did. And getting back to that middle of the road issue. On this particular road, since the lane is less than 14 feet wide, I can legally ride right down the middle of it, if I choose."
"You're wrong."
"No ma'am, I'm not. You need to review the Texas Transportation Code."
"It's too dangerous for you to be riding out in the middle of the road with that much traffic and holding things up."
"Again, you need to look at the Transportation Code. It clearly says what is and isn't allowed when it comes operating a bicycle."
Her companion joins in at this point: "There's a sidewalk there you could be riding on."
"The sidewalk joints are too uneven to ride safely. Besides, check your city ordinances. The City of Austin prohibits cyclists from riding on the sidewalk." (Really only true in certain neighborhoods, but they sure didn't know that)
The driver comes back in with my favorite line: "Well, you need to get yourself right with God."
"Pardon me?!?!?" I'm absolutely floored by this comment. "First, you have no idea of what my relationship with God may be. Second, what could it possibly have to do with this situation?"
"You need to straighten your life out with him before you get yourself killed riding like you are and have to face eternity."
Again, I'm nearly speechless......nearly. "Let me get this straight: I have to get right with God because you want to kill me?" She didn't like that very much and just kind of blathered a bit. "Since I can tell that you're a fine, upstanding Christian, I'm sure you're going to rush right home and pray for my poor soul and for the Lord to keep me safe from inconsiderate and woefully ignorant drivers such as yourself, aren't you now?"

That's the point where I rode away.

Funny.

Last fall, my friend and I were riding, with him on my wheel, when we were set upon by a pack of six or eight chihuahuas. I swerved one way and he the other, he caught my rear wheel with his front (front wheel always loses) and he went down, got some prety good road rash. After he brushed off and we stopped laughing at the yapping pack, we went knock on the owner's door, and showed her what her dogs had done, and explained the leash law to her. I ride that route often and haven't seen the pack since then.

WOOOOOW!!!!!!!

I've got it easy with my running the roads around me. I run on what little shoulder this is...if there is one...and run against traffic. I run with my dog (look left at the pic) and always stop when a car is coming from either direction so they don't think the dog is going to run into the road. I put the dog between my feet on a short leash. Nearly every drive gives a wave or a look of approval for helping them understand the dog is going nowhere.

Along with that, no one has even attempted to swerve at me or throw anything.

Now I haven't hade much road experience on the bike yet but I hope things don't change.

LOL! A pack of chihuahuas hunting for cyclist! I hope he didn't fall on the little guys... So when he fell did they go for the jugular? Was he chihuahua lunch? Did Paris Hilton come to apologize?

ROFL! Be careful lest the chihuahua herds get you!

I guess I've been lucky.  Besides the occasional close call when 2 cars and I pass one another at the same moment and things are a bit tight, I haven't had too many issues with jerks.  Besides, the occasional car of girls that'll make a comment from time to time all my cycling has been event free.  Then again, I've only been cycling for about 6 months now...I guess its only a matter of time.

Now running on the other hand is freaking dangerous on some of the roads.  I've been close called many a time - 90% are little old ladies scared to ride close to or on the double yellow.  Lunchtime runs are the best as most of the people around work recognize me and there's always a few joggers around.  Truckers are the best around me.  They'll bust their ass to slide over on foot or bike or slow their rigs down quick.  I'll always greet em with a nod or wave when I'm running the other way.

Things have got to be different in big towns or cities where the same set of people don't pass by you regularly.  In a smaller town like mine, people get used to seeing you out there and get to "know" you, which I think helps as well.

That is just awesome. Sounds more like the conversation I'd have in my head an hour after the fact.

Anytime someone has to fall back on extremely lame religious attacks in a debate you can just smile, say "I win" and walk away.

I'm a cycling newbie, so I don't have any actual incidents like the one's mentioned thus far, but I've had a few close calls:

I was riding along a fairly busy road one afternoon and a tow truck came whizzing by me going about 45 mph (I was probably going 20). This wasn't a flat bed tow truck where the car sits up on the truck, either, the minivan in tow had its rear wheels rolling on the road. Anyway, I come up around the next bend (about 5 blocks from where the truck passed me) and see that the minivan had become unhitched from the tow truck and it skidded off to the right side of the road. If I had left my apartment 1 minute sooner that day, it would have been a pretty crappy ride.

Here is a story about a friend of mine who rides quite a bit. It shows how the tables can turn when you ride in packs and cooler heads don't prevail

I haven't been so unlucky. The worst I've had is the occaisional honk or screaming out the window. I would like to say it was a good feeling the first time a pack of girls shouted their approval of the ...um view. Anyway here's the story:

They were on a small group ride of about 3-5 guys (all seasoned roadies, 1 or 2 semi pro)heading through a suburban residential area. A small car full of teenage boys came by, and one of them spit out the window and hit one of the group. Well, the car just happened to stop at a light about a 1/2 mi up the road. When they saw this someone yelled, "We can catch them!" The whole group sprinted up around the car, got off the bikes and started shaking and rocking the car. The teenagers being the all attitude and no concept of actual human behavior type were scared out of their wits and just sat there with the windows rolled up, too scared to even pull away.

It was at this point that one of the bike group slapped their hand on the sunroof of the car. There was no rock or other hard implement involved, just a gloved hand. The sunroof must have had a flaw in the glass or something because it shattered, raining glass all over the teenagers. Now this was enough to get the kids into actual action. They got out of the car. Of couse by that time the pack of bikes was well on their way in the other direction as fast as they could muster.

A van who just saw the last bit of this exchange decided to give chase. The van took off following the pack for several minutes as they dodged around street corners. They finally pulled a quick turn and hid-out in a friend's garage. The friend happened to be an older lady who just thought they were tired and thirsty. They stayed there till the heat was off...

The moral of this story: well...don't spit at more than one biker, keep your cool when confronting stupid motorists, and if you see a guy and appreciate the view, it's ok to honk and yell.
